I want to hunt hogs
« on: August 21, 2009, 04:11:46 PM »
Wanting to go hunt some wild hogs this winter, after all of our local late seasons are over. Have been looking at Texas (air fare isn't too bad). Does any one have any info or any ideas on some where else to go. Not looking at spending a lot of money. would consider an outfitter if not too much.

If you are looking for wild hogs head to Bremerton about 2 weeks after a ship leaves!   ;)  You can easily bag a 250+ pounder and all it will cost you is a couple of Keystone Lites!

There is some good hog hunting in Northern California. You can drive there in one day. I was looking at some guides on private land around  $400-$600

There used to be a ranch in Eastern Wa that had huge, free range Russian hogs but I can't remember the name of what they charged.

Back in the 90's when I was stationed in Alameda California we used to drive down to Fort Hunter Liggitt.  It's an Army reserve where they do tank training.  Lots of critters running around that place.  And they regulate how many people are in what area, kind of like GMU's.  Worth looking in to.  Have a campground for ya too right there.  Sometimes at night you could see tanks firing rounds onto an adjacent mountain.  Kind of a cool place.

Have looked at California, but for the money including airfare Texas is around $1000.00 for an all inclusive three day hunt with unlimited hogs. Seems like a pretty good deal, but I don't know of any one who ever went down there. would be nice to have a couple of references.

i'll be in hawaii next june hunting hogs. the wife will be there and be happy too. the best of both worlds. a hunting license is about 90 bucks and no limits. there's also some feral goats and mouflon sheep to be had in the right places. this can be done DIY on public ground.

i live in southern cali and have hunted hogs a few times at Vandenberg AFB , but i am active duty and i think you have to be active duty or retired to hunt there or have someone sponser you. Tejon Ranch is susposed to have good
hunting there might be a little pricey though.

this place is located in Ashford Oregon, they use to have hogs there do not  know if they do anymore but worth a try it is only about a 6 hour drive from here. They usually give better deals if you get a group to go. If you are thinking about it let me know would be willing to jump in with the group I am going for a couple of rams to mount and play around with.

I'd be surprised if they didn't still have hogs.  Just last month the Oregon Invasive Species Council featured feral swine as their "invasive of the month" and released a report that specifically mentioned the Ashford area as one of the known infested areas.  I'm actually looking to head down there myself sometime in the next few months, if I can wrangle the time away from the family, and go check it out.  Since leaving TX I've been mourning the loss of my hog hunting opportunities.

Speaking of hogs... does anybody know if they're present in the Banks Lake area in Eastern Washington?  I was out with my kids in Sun Lakes/Dry Falls State Park a couple weeks ago, and we went to hike a trail in the southeast corner of the park. All over the ground I could see what looked to my eye like feral hog damage. The ground was littered with roundish holes about 6" deep, with sides that were vertical on one side but sloped sharply away from the hole on the other. Soil from the hole is roughly distributed around that sloped side.

During my couple years hunting hogs in TX I'd gotten used to seeing this in hog country, and had always understood that this was the result of hogs sniffing out grubs & things in the ground and rooting them out. But I didn't think there were any hogs in Washington. What else leaves a hole like this? It's pretty distinctive.

I pulled up the Canyon Crest website, and they say the ranch is closed. Doesn't say anything about how long or forever.  :bash:

If your still looking at Texas, google hogs in Hondo and Sabinal. There are about 4-5 places within 30 miles of each other. Last I seen, the couple places in Hondo were running $100-150 a day?
