High or Low??
« on: September 04, 2009, 10:23:01 AM »
As I mentioned when I first joined the board, my hubby (Jason) is new to hunting, it's his 2nd year deer hunting & 1st year with a bow. He was out tuesday morning in the Mt. Spokane area and didnt see/hear nothin  :bash:. Last night (6-8pm) we went up close to the same area to do some scouting & only managed to spot and handfull of does & a couple of fawns in the lower elevations. His stand on Tuesday was quite a ways up a mountain side but looked promising with some game trails & a water source (creek) close by.

Looking for opinions and/or experience for if at this time of year is it better to work higher ground or stick low? :dunno:

Thanks!  :)

Whoops! Guess I should have said we were looking mostly for Whities!! But then again, either would be a tasty addition to the freezer!  :chuckle:

WhiskyRiver, you chasing whitetails or mulies?  Probably whitetails.  Alot of times right after the velvet comes off they kind of vanish for a bit.  A trail Camera moved around might also help you pin point them.  Whitetails are pretty much homebodies this time of the year, if you can set up 50 to 100 yards from a good food source you can smoke them bucks that are slow to head to the fields in the evening.  Good luck to you and your hubby.

That's BS. If you're willing to go out there and get bit by bugs.. You ought to get in the game and shoot too!

If the critters aren't coming by your stand, you gotta go to them. Get in the woods. Still hunt. -Yes, even with a bow. Take three steps.. Stop, look, listen, smell. Glass again.  Take three more steps. Stop, look, listen, smell. Glass again. Repeat.

Whitetails I'd hang around anything agriculture.  If you can get permission for private great, if not, study some runways or hills that are near civilization.  Its drying up out there and anything with some water on it is going to draw them.  There will be wilderness whitetails up high as well, but that is serious needle in a haystack type stuff and more appropriate for spot and stalk, not stand.....
