I want to shoot grouse
« on: August 22, 2009, 10:30:52 AM »
I live in Vancouver, and I would like to get a crack at these grouse. I've never hunted for grouse before, so where can I go around here?

There's lots of state land east of Battleground. I've seen grouse up there in the last couple months, while working. The only specific area I can recall where I saw grouse was near the L-1410 Road. To get there go 1 mile south of Hokinson, turn left (East) and go up to Rawson Rd, which will then get you up to the DNR L-1400 Rd. The L-1410 will be on the left and the gate (blue) will probably be closed. If so you can walk in there and probably find a grouse or two. There is also a Longview Fibre gate about 1 mile before the 1410 road on the left. That gate is blue and would also be a good place to park and walk in. If you don't want to do that much walking you can just stay on the L-1400 and you'll find plenty of open roads.

If you have more time and don't mind driving a little farther you could drive up hwy 14 to Carson and go up in the Wind River country. Lots of National Forest and state land up there to hunt.

I know that road you're talking bout!! Are you a logger?? Man that country sounds like it'll be fun.  What kind of shot should I
Use for grouse?

I know that place too. We've driven by there. Is it marked or anything? the state land in Carson?

No, not a logger. Land surveyor. A good all around shot size for grouse is #6.

I haven't been in the Carson area for a while, so I can't tell you any specifics. What you need is two DNR Public Land maps, "Hood River" and "Vancouver," available here:
  http://www.dnr.wa.gov/BusinessPermits/Topics/Maps/Pages/public_lands_quadrangle_maps.aspx

There is a lot of National Forest land if you go up the Wind River out of Carson. That would be the Gifford Pinchot National Forest so you'll want to pick up a couple of maps from the USFS as well. Try this for a start:

Heres a few blues from the Sawtooths but beware as the weather can change in a minute as it did on me.

I went out for a couple hours this afternoon, not far from my house. Walked about 7 miles, into an area I used to hunt years ago that had lots of grouse. Now it's all really overgrown with 20 year old firs, and I don't think as attractive to the grouse anymore, but I still got into a group of 6 blues in the first 30 minutes and then a couple other singles later on.

I took two shots at the first group but didn't touch a feather.  :bash:

The other two I didn't even have a chance to get off a shot. But it was still fun getting out in the woods. If Weyerhaeuser was open I'd have more options on places to find blue grouse.

I got out to my normal old spot on Sunday.  Got about 200 yds from the car and the rain started.  About a mile in it was pouring and nothing was moving.  I figured I better get off the mountain before my little corolla couldn't :chuckle:
