« on: August 22, 2009, 10:17:29 PM »
This is my first year trying to call bears. So far no luck calling.I have seen a few bears in the area and plenty of sign.My question are after you call how far do you move before you call again. What time a day do you have the best results.I bought a rabbit distress call would i have a better chance with a fawn distress calland what do you do for scent control.I know that is alot of questions.Any help would be great

Distance between call stands varies, what is the wind conditions like?  What is the terrain like, mostly how far is your call carrying.  You want to move far enough that you are not calling in the same area your previous call reached.  I personally like a very coarse call for bears, but plenty of folks have called them in with higher pitched calls.  You'd be surprised up in the mountains how short a distance your call is actually covering.  If I'm in smoking hot country I usually move 3/4 of a mile to a mile. I don't worry too much about scent control with bears, I just try to call with my face into the wind where I hope a bear is at, they can usually tell what flavor tic tacs you have in your pocket.  :)

Read this if you havent.

I have called in bears in the morning, evening and mid day. It doesnt seem to matter much. Granted, I would rather call in morning or evening when I think bears are most active, however, if there is a spot that looks like it holds some bears, why not give it a shot and see what comes.

I have had bears come in on rabbit distress (bears were on the sneak), calf distress (bear charged in) and coyote distress (that bear was charging in quick).

You might have called in bears (or other things) you just might not have seen them.

I called an area a few days ago, sign everywhere, even smelled of bear...called one hour, no luck. Took a nap like 100 yards away, woke up and a bear was within 20 yards. I am not sure if the bear heard the call and took forever to come check it out, or if he was just passing by. It was just a coincidence. :dunno:

I dont use any scent control, I just watch the wind. Practice, read up on some of the stories on here, watch your back and have fun!

Both Machias and Saylean hit it on the head. There are tons of variables and all you can do is try, read and try some more.

I prefer calling in the morning, but have called them in at all hours of the day. I also prefer the wind in my face and I focus on the areas that I think a bear should come from. It is all in learning the lay of the land, food sources and habits of bears.

Keep it up and it will work out for you.
