timber land closed-where to hunt elk SW Wa
« on: August 23, 2009, 09:53:05 PM »
I usually bow hunt in Coweeman or Winston units that are timber companies land.  The timber companies have every gate locked due to fire hazard and you can't even walk in.  I scouted the national forest area and didn't find much sign, other than really old stuff.  Any ideas where to bow hunt elk if it stays this way around SW Wa.  :dunno:

I suppose you could try the Lewis River unit. That's where everybody else will be.

Or get a DNR Public Lands map and hunt state land. I know there is quite a bit in the Winston unit. Also Willapa Hills, Ryderwood, Fall River all have state land that you should be able to get into.

Grab some smoked fish, bake some pies, offer to help out a farmer or two and start knockin' on doors.

Since when did the coweeman change to 560? I thought 560 was the lewis river and 550 was coweeman! You must be thinking of the cowicheeman 568 or something :chuckle:

I noticed that too but figured it was just a typo. I know not everybody has the numbers of all the GMU's in the state memorized like I do.   :chuckle:

I talked to a friend in Weyerhaeuser management and he said its highly unlikely any of their property will be open to the public by Sept-8th. I called Rainier timber and finnally got ahold of someone and they said they will not have any of their gates or property open in the Winston unit.

My buddy and I were there on Saturday checking around that same area.  Guess we can help each other getting our elk out.
