BEARS!!!!!!
« on: August 26, 2009, 10:06:50 AM »
I have seen or heard bears everytime I have been out.My wife and I went out last night,we watched a bear circle around a patch of alders in the middle of a cut for about 45 minutes. The berries were so thick that we could not see the bear. All we could see was the brush moving. It was pretty cool to take the wife out for her first bear encounter.I'm pretty sure the bear was a juvenile. He was making a whole lot of noise, but compared to the big one I shot at; it was small noise.A couple of days ago I took my two youngest kids out,the boy ten and the girl seven. We walked up some logging road, that had a three year old cut on one side and on the other side repro of about 20 years. The repro was so thick that we could not see any further than about 20 feet. The cut was perfect forage grounds for a bear.Thick with blackberries, thimble berries, and choke cherries. So we were concentrating on glassing this cut.About 10 minutes goes by of glassing. When i here WOOF! :yike:I asked the kids did you here that? They both said yes, what was that?I said it's a bear.My daughters first response was her eyes grew wide. She then started to cry. :'(I told here it was going to be ok Daddy has a big gun. :chuckle:So the crying let up and we started glassing again and WOOF!By the second WOOf we could tell the bear was behind us in the thick stuff. :yike:My first thought was to get out in the cut on a big stump and wait for the bear to show himself. :bdid:My daughter was going to have none of that. She said she would like to go now.So we turned around and headed back towards the truck. On the way back to the truck the bear was following us in the reprod woofing. After the fifth or sixth woof my daughter was terrified. :yike:My son on the other hand was saying dad I hope the bear shows himself.I want to get a bear.So after the sixth or so time of the bear letting us know that he didn't want us there, I yelled;GET THE HELL OUT HERE BEAR!!!!!The bear went crashing through the timber away from us.So now my daughter won't go bear hunting with Dad anymore :( So I will be out friday again with my 10 year old in tow to get the (WOOFING BEAR).

Sounds like your Daughter will grow up to be a woman of good sense with a level head on her shoulders.

Unlike the rest of us....  ("lets try to poke it with a stick and see what it does!")

I will admit I have changed directions a few time while in the woods with a lot less reason than you guys had.   :chuckle:  Tell your daughter that women get scared easier than men because they are smarter then us.   :chuckle:

No people will tamely surrender their Liberties, nor can any be easily subdued, when knowledge is diffused and Virtue is preserved. On the Contrary, when People are universally ignorant, and debauched in their Manners, they will sink under their own weight without the Aid of foreign Invaders.

Remember going hunting for bears with your pocket knife tied to the end of a stick?  Good times.   :chuckle:

What a great experience. Someday your daughter will be embarrassed when that story is retold. Reminds me of the time my son and I were bear hunting. He was about 8 yrs old, and we had hiked in about 2 miles. We were sitting on an open hillside, mid-morning, and the sun was shining down on us, all warm. Felt so good I decided that I'd grab a 10-15 min. nap. I'd been asleep less than 5 when I hear crying, open my eyes and my son is all teared up. I asked what was the matter, and he said you're sleeping! There's bears out here! I just chuckled and said the same thing you told your daughter, I've got a gun.
