338 RUM Anyone?
« on: December 13, 2007, 08:38:47 PM »
Anyone have a 338 RUM?  Just wondering as I am getting interested in a new gun.  I have a 300RUM, but the 338 has my interest for now.  Wondering how they feel the recoil is compared to other larger calibers.  I will not have a brake on it as I don't like them on my hunting rifles.    Not interested in a 338WM as I have shot them, and feel like I would be going backwards.

what are you hoping the 338 will do that the 300 won't?

I think you need to get up into the 338edge or 338/378 to see ballistic improvements over the 300RUM. pure energy....well they both got more than we had available a few years back.

Oh the 300 will do everything fine.  I just need a new rifle every 2-3 years, and would like to shoot an elk with a 338.  I am just about maxed out in recoil with the 300RUM 180@3400, but could handle a little more.  Just trying to get some info if it is available.  I have shot some large guns before .410, .458, 375, and they don't have that really sharp recoil of the smaller mags.  The recoil is heavier but the pressure spike is way longer so not as sharp.  Did not know if that applied to the 338RUM.  I will find one to shoot before I buy one....no I will probably get one anyway but just wondering.  Was hoping for info on true chronographed speeds (please no book or guesses) so I can start checking ballistics.

No, but I had a 25-06 and was unhappy with it.  I know people who love the 25 caliber.  Will have to look up the ballistics on that.  Wonder how it would compare to a 257 STW.  I won't go below 7mm for a big game rifle.  Don't attack as I have shot deer with many calibers with no problems and I am not saying anything about another caliber.

257stw does have a few fps on the roy, but it is also toast in a case of primers. I understand your wanting big bangers, I was/am there too, but I bought the 257roy as it saw as close to the 300RUM as anything if down loaded and I could use similar ballistic data. I figure the day will come when I don't enjoy the recoil as much so I bought a little gun......that little gun has put deer down in less steps than my big RUM and the elk seem to hit the dirt just as fast.

if you want to have the baddest rig around, why not go with the chey-tac or lazzaroni? if they can't quench you taste for speed look up the arnold arms 375/50bmg.......a 375gr solid at 5grand is pretty cool.
