bowhunting gods hate me.
« on: August 31, 2009, 09:22:45 AM »
So I've been having clearance problems with my drop away.  So I switched back to a whisker bisquit and got that sucker zeroed in really well.  I was all good to go for the September 1st opener.  So fast forward to Saturday August 29th.  I'm up camping and shooting my bow when all of a sudden POW.  My f'cking string broke and sliced open my hand.  You have no idea on the level of pissed off I achieved.  I just bought my Alpha Max in May.  It broke where the peep sight goes in the string.  Granted I've put about 2000-2500 arrows through that sucker since May but still there is no reason why my string should have snapped.  Hoyt and the shop I bought it from will be getting a call from me. >:(  All I have to say is they better have the quickest string turnaround on the face of the earth.

Bummer.. Ive never seen that happen was it frayed or something or did it just pop :dunno:

I always have a back up string for my bow with me when Im hunting just in case something like that happens.  especially this time of year when everything gets slammed and the turnaround time is slower.

That sucks.  I hope that your bow doesn't have any more damage like bent axles or cams.

What peep did you have installed?  That is actually very common for some brands that have a string angle requirement.  I usaully file mine down a bit to smooth out the sharp corners then tie it in real good.  I hope that everything works out for you.  Go make a sacrafice to the BH godes.

Wow!  They'll take care of you by putting a new one on as you stand there if they're worth their salt at all.  New bows don't come with strings that break, and when they do, then the shops bust their butt to help out.  Good luck!

wdfw.  It just popped.  I keep my string pretty well waxed up and I did not notice anything frayed.  It was weird.  It didn't  happen while I was drawing back.  I was already drawn back and had just settled my pin and about to pull the trigger when POW.  I should check my warranty.  Maybe I'll get a free one.  Although if the replacement string is the same as the one I just had (the original Hoyt string) then I don't want it.  Hopefully this isn't an omen of things to come.

Matt hopefully I make a sacrifice of a nice 4x4 buck I've been watching, tomorrow.  :chuckle:

Be real careful, that would be the same as a dry fire, hopefully the limbs weren't damaged.  Glad you weren't hurt any worse.

The first thing I do when I buy a new hoyt is take the strings off and throw them away.   I use Stone Mt strings and have had excellent results :dunno:

Man that sucks...I guess you could be glad it didn't happen while you were drawn back on that big buck!

In reality though, 2500 shots is alot on a string...

Those sound like some nice strings WDFW.  I got a new string put on yesterday.  Like Todd said Mike at Grizzly Archery busted his butt to put it on in an hour.  I didn't even buy it from him but he's a really great guy.  The only set of strings he had that would fit my bow was a set of winners choice strings so that's what's on there.  I wont be able to hunt with it until elk season but at least I have my brothers bow to use until then.  On average how many shots does it take to ensure your string is stretched/broken in?

I want to eventually buy some stone mt strings or the like.  But winners choice was all they had and Im sort of pressed for time.  I just shot 100 arrows today during lunch.  So I have tomorrow and Friday to sight in my 20, 30, 40 and 50 yd pins.  I think I can do it.  By the time elk rolls around it'll definately be set.  Thanks for the help and advice guys.

I bought the bow from AS&J Archery in Yakima.  But I have Mike from Grizzley Archery do all of my bow maintenance.  Mike is a heck of a guy and within an hour of me taking my bow in it was ready.  This was on very short notice.  He's really busy but managed to squeeze me in.  To anyone around the Yakima/Ellensburg area I recommend you take your bow to him.  Even if you don't buy it from him your gear to him.  You wont regret it.

Wow, you bought the bow at AS&J but have Grizzly do all your maint.? Does Grizzly not carry Hoyt or did you have a bad experience at AS&J?? I've only been there once but he seemed to know what he was doing and seemed like a nice guy. I think you did better on the WC over Stone Mtn. WC is more consistant with their streching process and the serving is better IMO.

Personally, I've purchased stuff from both (got my bow from Mike last year in fact) and have been happy with both overall.  But, I'm a little surprised that Mike was able to fit you in and get you set up so quickly colockumelk.  Don't get me wrong, his work is great, but just getting a dozen arrows built takes me over a week.  But, I'm not one to rush good work.

You forgot to mention what kind of bow was reliable enought to bail your ars out for the opener.  Just figured that people on here would like to know and I think you should spell it out for everyone.  I will help.  "I Aaron B. was saved by my brothers (insert bow brand here) because my Hoyt was inferior."  :chuckle:

I know the feeling man. My string did the same thing to me a few years back. When it broke it blew my whisker bisbut in about 1,000 pieces and sent a cloud of broken arrow chunks and hair fibers into the air. I got a really nice purple bruise on my arm. There is no level to describe the amount of pissed off i was. I hope you get it figured out and get back in the Field.

I bought the bow from AS@J because after testing bows for 6 months I liked the Hoyt AM32 the best.  Iv'e taken my business to Mike at Grizzly Archery for the last three years.  He does really good work and in a timely manner.  Also in an emergency he'll help you out like he did with me.  I'm sure Brandon at AS@J is a great guy but I prefer Mike at Grizzly that's all.  I didn't have a bad experience at AS@J.

I have shot about 2,000 arrows since I bought that bow.  I love the Hoyt AM32.  THe string obviously sucked but everyhting else is awsome.  BTW the WC string shoots great.

I took it hunting this last weekend while I didn't fling any arrows I did stalk some really nice mule deer this last weekend.  Open country Mule Deer is very addicting.

A Bowtech Alligiance temporarily bailed me out for the first day of the season.  However it must have some sort of deer repellant since the deer we'd been patterning never showed up.  Thank goodness my Hoyt Alpha Max 32 is back in action.
