Which tent
« on: August 31, 2009, 09:37:18 PM »
I'm wrapping up my packing. I'll be lucky enough to have a horse carry my gear in for me.

I'm not sure which tent to bring so I'm looking for input.

I've got a Montana Canvas (Cabela's) Spike tent (10'x10') that I just finished seal seaming. It leaks on the bottom corners under the direct spray of a garden hose but I'm not too worried about some water on the floor as the front has a mesh screen. The top and corners seem to be okay.....but not sure about a long term rain storm.

Or, an LL Bean tent that has a full rain fly and I can easily toss a tarp up and over. The front half of this one has no floor so I can stand under it (barely) without having to take shoes off. The walls come up too on the sides for a 'screened porch.'

No woodstove for the Spike Tent. I can stand in both and will be the only one in it with my cot and a couple of bins.

I'll be in upper central WA if that helps weather wise.

Thoughts?      :dunno:

Go with the canvas tent. It will look cooler when you have a a nice elk or deer rack next to it... :) I would go with the one you are more comfortable in. Plus I like lots of space.

Archery -- so leaving this Friday.

The spike tent is relite but it definately "looks" elk camp more than the LL Bean with the camo tarp over it.

The only reason I'm hesitant is that most of the leaking on the spike tent before sealing it was at the top seam -- leaked pretty bad after a couple minutes under the garden hose. I suppose if we get in under some trees, that would help in a down pour.

I'll have to set the sprinkler up on it for a few hours tomorrow and see how it does with that so it has time to dry before Thursday night......

Personally, I would go with the most mouse and insect proof tent. Better rest and peace of mind. Bugs and mice suck. Cool factor with the canvas.

Go mouse proof.

I'd take the LL Bean.  Nothing worse than being wet and trying to sleep.  The Spike tent has the cool factor going on, but I would rather rely on the dry factor.
