20 guage, what load for grouse
«
on:

I am not much of a bird hunter, and if I am hunting them, its usually with a 100 grain judo.
I got a single shot break barrel 20 guage the other day for grouse, I wanna head out tomorrow for a walk...
what loads do you guys use for the grouse.
Thanks in advance.

An ounce of lead 6's.
7 1/2's will work too if your shots aren't too far, especially if your only hunting ruffed grouse and not blues.

I am going to be using 3in #4 steel for my 20 gauge. Was very difficult to find in Washington, most of the shelves are bare of the steel shot in 3in shells. I dug for 30 minutes and found 3 boxes of Federal Premium and 1 box of Winchester Xpert.

I've never tried the nickel plated. Is it easy to find in the stores?

Most of the American nickel or copper plated isn't really going to make any difference in the field. It is washed, not plated as I understand it. The bigger question is the softness of the lead. In most cases you get what you pay for. $10 box better than $4 promos. With grouse there is a deminishing return though. Any 6's should do fine.

if you can get the buggers to sit still i bet it'd work great!
i'm sure that every one i see when i have my shotgun will just sit there on the ground and stare at me, but if i bring my .22 they'll all flush!
