Just got back and no luck today lots of rubs and fresh tracks all over. No answers tonight. Had better luck last night I got three bull's going at it hard about four in the after noon. I should have went back to the same spot tonight. I cant wait to hit it again this weekend.

It is a punishment when I could be up in the hills "exploring."  It's not too bad I guess.  I do have 1 huge smoker than another one about 3/4 its size right next to it.  And I agree, smoker smoke is always a great smell!

No I did not draw a tag I am not required to have a Washington state tag, I have been just cruising around to see what I can get in, have seen some nice bulls this year and lots of cow's It should be a good year for you bull tag holders they seem to be running a bit bigger this year. And yes me calling bull's before it opens might make them a little shy but there is no rule about calling them and I don't push them to hard I am addicted and cant control myself from calling, I have not killed anything this year and not in a hurry to kill anything I just enjoy the out doors as much as all of you. I spend most of my time on the rez.

  I wouldn't even call it hunting but yes I do have my rifle with me.

Personally no offense to you, but I wouldnt hardly call it hunting this time of year either with a rifle in a permit only big bull unit with screaming bulls.  Everyone on here would have trophys on the wall if we could be out there in August and September elk and deer hunting.

Just got a call from a good friend he said they were going good this morning 9:00 he called in a nice 6point  said the bull walked down the same trail as him he just stepped of the trail and watched him go by. I don't know If I can wait until this weekend.

I know what you mean YAK.  Bugling elk is straight up addicting as hell.  I do it in the Colockum where there's like 6 tags a year so I'm not bothering anyone.  Plus where I go I don't see anyone anyways.  Plus it sounds like you do what I do which is get them to talk back and come in and then when you can see them 50-100yds away you shut up.  I don't see the harm in it.  Just alot of fun.  YAK do you have a video camera.  If so getting them on video is awsome and you get to show off a bit.  It's really cool knowing that if you wanted to you could have smoked him.  "Camera Kills" are almost as fun.

Yes I have a few on camera don't normally take it but this year have had it every day just not shots yet.

Well if you get pics you better post them.  Especially if it's with a video camera.  I finally have a digital video camera so hopefully if I have the time I'll get some video of me calling some bulls.  If so I'll definately post them on here.

Sweet Yak!  I'm hoping to get out in the next week but school and field trips during September are killing me!  Especially after buglin in a bull last weekend!  Though the unit I'm scouting in doesn't give out ANY rut tags so I'm definitely not hurtin anything...  I'm a little jealous! lol

Old School I don't have a problem with Indians hunting year round.  I may not agree with it but they have the legal privelage to do so.  I have problem when that privelage is abused.  Such as when one individual goes into an area that has a very low bull to cow ratio and shoots 6 branch bulls a year.  That is when I get mad. 

YAK and I may not agree on some things but as far as I know he does not abuse his privelages as a Native American.

Not sure i agree with just random calling. It does educate the elk. In this case however, it would seem that Yak is actually hunting, not aggressively, but hunting all the same. He has just no run into something he wants to shoot. If i had a tag or privilege what ever you want to call it i would be up there calling bulls too. Bottom line is unless you have a bull tag this is a pretty mute point to argue. He is not really effecting your chance at a bull because you don't have a tag. If you do have a tag, well, life sucks when we find elk on another planet i guess we can take turns going there and being the only people in the woods. Until that happens we will all just have to share!

I moved here from Ky. last year and still can't make head or tails out of the elk permit system, what you can shoot and what permit you got to have...this is incredibly complex and I have even lived in California for years and it wasn't this bad. Now to top all that off y'all are saying that there are a group of people whom can shoot whatever they want, whenever they want and can shoot animals that I can't even hunt despite being a disabled Vet? I feel like I completely wasted my money and should have just hunted elsewhere?

They have some areas set aside for them, they can get the orange placard and shoot from the rig. They can put in for some special tags.

I am entitled to it, but don't feel that I am that disabled to drive around in a rig just yet.

yeah, i believe they give you keys to gated "special" units and depending on your disability, you can have someone else shoot for you... even use a cross bow during archery? maybe...

I am a disabled "service veteran" I was injured before going to war. I have my orange card. I do not use it other than the pheasant shot. As far as the state really doing anything for us it is a effort i guess but that is about it. Most of the waterfowl hunting spots suck to say the least. I cant really say anything about the big game spots i have not been to them. All in all most of the special tags are doe tags and most of them are on the west side. For meat hunts this is a good thing. As far as giving Disabled Veterans a better shot at a trophy, well that is just a dream.

Disabled Vets are not very appreciated in this country it seems, as an honorably discharged service-connected disabled  vet I've always felt like we are treated as if we are a burden whenever it comes to our special needs ...a lot of lip service is given but nothing ever comes of it. I'm not even wanting special privileges just a even chance, I even pay full price for my tags. I didn't know about road passes, I'll check for next year as I'm sure it's too late now but that would really help me. After an Army parachute accident and 13 spinal fusions I spent 4 years in a wheelchair and another 6 on crutches learning to walk again, bow hunted every year also...I'm blessed by God to even be able to go walking and hunting with my son in mountains. We are both fanatical about archery and haven't hunted with guns for years. I just wish for the chance to shoot a trophy bull without having to wait 10 years for a tag.

I am also 90% service disabled, I feel that if I can walk then why put in for a disabled hunt, let someone who needs it get it.

I have no problems waiting ten years for the tag that I want and when I do then I hope I am well enough to go after it

Well I got drawn for the Nooksack area and the opening day I got in on a nice 5pt at maybe 15 yds and a monster Bull went by in the timber with his nose up the butt of a cow. Unfortunately I have a spike tag. I've also seen a 6x6 and 2-4pts, but all has changed ,they're pretty scared , I'am trying to sneak up and get a close shot on a spike and the Natives are up here every day now shooting any deer and elk they see, maybe I should start wearing hunter orange cause they won't. I've only seen a couple of cows so far and three spikes, but hunting hard. I've only heard a few bugling so far. It's exciting but I hope some day we have a real co-op with the natives so when it's bow season, it's bow season and not special season with guns for them. It's not right , it's not fair and the Department Fish and Wildlife should be trying to negotiate equally seasons and limits.

Still the same Hit or Miss I can usually get them fired up in the morning and in the evening it is pretty hard. called in a big 6pt Sat, The big 6 was screaming till about 9:00 and then shut up I could hear a few off in the distance until about 7:00

While hunting the Blues this year I overheard a hunter talking to a forest ranger about the natives shooting bulls at night with semi-automatic rifles at  under a spot light. After shooting the bulls they would point a plastic bottle along side the road pointing to where the bull was shot, and would return later on to remove just the antlers, and leave the meat. He went on to say that they had counted 7 bulls shot with the antlers missing along side the road. I did see one bull that was shot and left with the antlers missing. This is poaching and something needs to be done about it.
