looking for new area western archery elk/deer

 still a newbee to sight, but finding lots of information on things so far. however, i am wondering about units 654,667,510 for elk and deer archery. i was previously checking out 454 until i came out and found the drug bust there the other day. so i am now searching for someone who would be willing to point me in the right area hopefully.i was in the 667 last year late season bow, to of snow at end of season and got sick had to return home. didn't learn much in 2 days.

skookumchuck has more deer per square mile than any area in the state,problem is weyco owns most of the land and dont open a lot of gates during bow season.hunt around yelm and you should easily find deer.

thanks for the heads  up.  iam headed out tomorrow for 5 days. it sucks when you don't know the area and have pretty much no time to scout anything out. it is gonna be a hit or miss trip, hopefully in my favor though.

trip was not a sucess. sons quiver broke 30 minutes after ariving and setting up camp. next morning got up on a clear cut, heard of elk across canyon with a big bull. stalked to it with no avail. third morning went to another area. walked around corner,turned to see what son was doing and jumped a cow 20 feet from me in the brush. at the same time the rest of the heard came out and bolted also. so no luck, but was a great bonding experience with my son on his first actual hunt. great time.

Good on ya, for showing the boy around and hunting with him.  Don't give up on the Elk so easily.  Elk are predictable, ya didn't get them the first morning, track em!  Determine where they are going, check the ground ahead of them and be where they are heading the next day.  It's like Steelheading, 10% of those fishing for them, catch 90% of the fish.  Same with Elk, those that learn where they are going, and get ahead of them, kill 90% of the Elk.

 Don't say your trip was not a success. You were with your son in the great outdoors and that bonding you two had, was far more priceless then putting an animal on the ground. And being his first actual hunt... no matter what the outcome was, he will remember it forever and hopefully some day he will be on this same site posting about his first hunting expierence with his Dad.

That happens all the time in bowhunting.  I would venture to say that your trip WAS a success.  You saw some elk, know that they live in the area now, and had time to spend with your son.

Remember where those elk were and figure out a different way to approach the area next time.  In my opinion, it takes a season or two of hunting an area to be any good there (not that you CAN'T get one the first season, it is just a lot more likely after you know an area).  The first season you spend a lot of time doing exactly what you did (just finding them and sometimes approaching them all wrong) and the second season (or the next time you're there this year) you can come into the area with a plan.

wow a drug bust .i was just up there in 454 getting firewood do you have the hand cock premit or do you just walk in  . i hunt it a lot.  kevin

atleast you saw some last year hunted five days for elk in a very hard area and saw 0 elk
