anyone know the elk in unit 101??
« on: September 04, 2009, 09:55:23 PM »
I live in kettle falls and just wonder if anyone knows some good spots to check out. I have been all over the matsen crk. herd for a few years with no luck. I would really like to find out where to go around sheep creek or above orient somewhere. I have herd of them being up there but don't know any good locations. any advice would be awsome thanks.

Try around Summit Lake east of Laurier. A friend of mine heard some squealing bulls a few years ago around there when he was camping.

Whoops, Summit Lake is in the #105 Kelly Hill unit, but there are elk there.

Yep, and generally the locals will offer you less help.   :chuckle:   Befriend a logger, they usually know best.  Then it will cost you two cases of beer to get them drunk so they'll tell ya.   Since its open to any tribal member I believe, that also hurts your chance.

Find the corner to dark to see into, to thick to go into, to steep to go up or down, and to far from the road to pull something out of. That is where they are. :P

On this one 2 mile road I found I saw Whitetails, Mule Deer, Black Bear, coyotes, and this herd of elk. (Not to mention the *censored* pot of grouse) and this is about as centerally located in the middle of GMU 101 as you can get as far as east and west, good luck finding them in there, it's really really hard !! Oh and it's thicker then a 2 day old crap !!  ;)

I don't know them personally, but would know them when I see them.   :dunno:
By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

If you check the harvest stats for unit 101 and 105. It shows that the total for all weapons combined last year was 3 in ferry county and a total of 14 in Kelly hill. Not a real great return on a investment of a week. Even if a local or someone didn't report truthfully I don't think the numbers would be greater than 1 or 2 animals. for the respective unit's. Alladin,49 degrees both had a higher percentage. The Elk that were referenced to by Summit lake bounce back and forth across from Canada depending on the pressure up there and I spend a few days a year up there have never seen an elk around Summit. The elk season in BC is a 6 point or better hunt and used/or still is a permit draw

In 2007 there were 2 guys from I believe Oak Harbor show up in Kelly Hill got there late and made Coffee when it got light they wandered down the skid road and BAM shot a cow. The next year they had a small city of friends and had dismal results.
