Big Roosevelt Down

Opening weekend success, almost don’t feel right.
As we pulled up and parked well before dark we both knew what we had left there the evening before. We had a big bull right in front of Dustin at full draw and at 20 yards but with the reprod so thick the shot was not there so Dustin moved forward on the bull as he trashed on a tree and as it happens so many times the bull turned and went back to pushing the cows up the hill.
Thoughts of having that bull so close screaming lets fight made the lack of sleep slip away as we started the long walk in.
As the sun burned through the fog and lit the sky, it was time to get to work. Dustin will be calling so I moved forward and got set up. Dustin let out a bugle and a bull hammered right back so we pressed forward closing the distance keeping the pressure on him and letting him know we were there to share his ladies. As we neared the bottom I set up again and Dustin let him have it. The bull screamed right back and was moving in. I caught a flash of elk down below me but did not get a good look. The elk was coming in but I still could not get a good look. As he moved forward I got a look at him at about 40 yards and could see he was the bull we were after. I scanned ahead for a shooting lane and readied for the shot as he came though that shooting lane I let out a cow call and he came to a stop and the arrow was on its way passing completely through the massive body of this herd bull. He spun and ran back the way he just came from, I quickly hit him with a bugle as did Dustin.
Dustin hearing the shot quickly worked his way down to me, we moved forward some to get a better vantage of the spot I last saw the bull. Dustin then climbed up on one of the Volkswagen sized stumps and saw him go down. YES….. Big Bull Down!!!!!! Time for some fist pumps.
As I approached the bull I could not believe that My Oregon season was over that quick. Then with a smile on my face I remembered there is more to the hunt then just the kill. Our season is just beginning.
Just wanted to say thanks to Dustin for being there with me and calling this bad boy in. Great calling bud, know lets get you one even bigger!
And to the team of mules lol. I would still be packing if it was not for your help! So big thanks to Cory, Jon, Mark, Dustin and Aaron.
