Western Wa Elk
« on: September 14, 2009, 09:30:09 AM »
Friday 630pm called a Spike to 30 yrds.  Five minutes later called tow cows in,  I'm not interested but my buddy was, they caught him moving BUSTED.  Five minutes later  more cows.  I had about three different cows answering my so I hit my bugle BOOM 90yrds away a deep throat answer with a long chuckle  :yike:  Game on!  I had him all fired up so I moved to a good shooting lane where my longest shot would be 50 yrds.   Bugle was getting a little closer,  I gave the old come %*&* me cow and he was running :IBCOOL:I look over my shoulder and my buddy is moving down the old grade we were on looking down.  Turn my head to see the Elk stop spin and trot away  >:( We called and stopped him at about 75 through the brush (NO SHOT) I got the bugle out and got him to answer two more times, than nothing.  GAME OVER.  We sat and let it get dark on us no night time bugling :dunno:.

Saturday morn we walked about 4 miles trying to locate Elk.  Nothing so we headed up a new direction, after sweating all of our face paint off climbing straight up about 600 ft in elevation we crested the top.  about 15 seconds later we both heard a bugle about 200yrds away.  After making our way into the zone,  We were surrounded by Elk. We were below the whole heard, they were feeding toward us and the wind was in our favor :IBCOOL:  All of a sudden wee could here something running at us TWO spikes came running down the trail straight at my buddy, He was 4 yrds at full draw when the spike decided to put on the brakes and take off, his spike buddy followed him.  This whole time I was hearing branches snap ferns part and Elk move.  The Bull  bugled 8 times in about 15-20 min while we were calling him.  40 yrds below me the first cow popped out of the brush folowed by a calf an a couple more cows.  I needed to loose some elevation to clear a shooting lane, quickly while those cows passed I made four giant running straight downhill and stopped next to a tree.  Almost busted I had a stand off with a cow for 30 sec, bow up not at full draw.  She gave me the go ahead so i relaxed and waited ready to draw each time another Elk came through single file.  After about 15 cows 4 calf's and 2 more spikes I thought any minute a rag horn  I came to full draw three times thinking this next one will be a bull for sure.  I let three cows stop at thirty yrds with my pin on them.  The Big boy was still 50 yrds away through bunch of brush.  No bark she just saw something she didn't like and turned around walk right passed the Bull he bugle twice and they were gone not spooked but just uncomfortable.  Our other group of hunters saw that same Bull with ten cows so I figure he had about an 40 head heard, lots of calf's 6 spikes no rag horns and a Bull at least a 5x5 Rossy.
  That was fun.

Sunday same bat channel same bat station.  We were back at it we caught a bull bugling on the same ridge as the other bull from the day before but he didn't want to play. Another few miles on the boots.  I think we will let the heard cool down a few days!  We had a ton of fun and I got some heat from my buddies for letting cows walk, but like I said Im just not interested, maybe in November if I dont score early season I will shoot a cow :dunno:

Just wanted to share
