Selkirk questions
« on: September 16, 2009, 04:21:14 PM »
So,  I was just wondering........   When I go over the first week of October to the Selkirk unit for my moose hunt,   it is also elk muzzleloader season.    My questions are:    How many muzzleloaders typically hunt that area?   Are there really very many elk up there?    I admit I know nothing about elk in the northeast corner  of the state.    I'm a southwest guy.
Do they tend to go to one area or side of the unit more than others?    What kind of numbers of people am I going to have to contend with in that regard?     Any insight would be appreciated.      Getting soooooooooooooooo excited    .     Can't seem to  talk about much else.

There can be some great muzzy hunting for elk up there, we have had some goodtimes hunting elk up there around metalline. Bring your calls, your not going to scare the moose. I am in the same boat as u,I too have a muzzy elk tag, I am strapping my muzzy to my back come the 3rd! I just found a herd of elk that no one is hunting in one of my moose areas, i will be there the 3rd!

You are going to be running into some hunters up there, but if anything they are going to be helpful.
I would ask every guy I could in the woods about the moose they have seen, most are going to be helpful about pointing you towards moose.

I'd be savoring that moose tag.  Screw the elk.   You won't scare a moose with an elk call.  I have bugled in several in fact.  I think hornseeker has as well, including one that fell in love with him.  The elk population is booming.  I can't even venture a guess to how many bulls I heard bugling yesterday up there.  LOTS    Problem is, you shoot one then you are dealing with an elk instead of a moose.   If you shoot a moose you'll have your hands full, you won't need to be thinking about elk. :twocents:
