Years back I went elk hunting with a few guys and while we were planning the next days hunt they asked me if they could shoot more than one elk and use my tag if they got into a herd. I said "hell no, My tag goes on my animal." They were actually surprised at my response. What say you? I'm not talking legalities or morals, we all know party hunting is illegal in this state. To me the kill is part of the hunt. While the meat is important to me, it's not soooooo important that I want people shooting my game for me. Ever have this happen to you? What did / would you say? Honestly ducks, grouse, pheasants, I don't care. But Elk, Deer, Bear. Sorry, not my tag.

I have one very arrogant person that wanted to take me hunting for archery deer last year. Said he would shoot it and i will tag it and if it is a buck he would take the rack. I just laughed and asked how he planned to tag 2 deer. We don't hunt together no more but really it is no loss. Hope you get your animal.

I know "somebody" who once filled a cousins cow tag while he was in Iraq looking for Saddam. They were the same age and looked alot alike.

 I was bitched out a few years back by an ex hunting partner for not shooting 2 bucks and giving him one.  I was in my treestand hunting while he was back at camp drinking beer.  3 bucks came by my stand at all together and I took the biggest one (140 class).  The other 2 were dinks.  The same deer walked by where his stand would have been if he had not been so lazy.  I told him about the other bucks while I was getting ready to hang mine.  He asked why I didnt shoot one for him and I told him to get off of his sorry ass and do it himself.  He came unglued and could not believe that I wouldn't help him out.  (by poaching)  He kept saying how much he needed the meat but, by his actions, wasn't willing to put in the effort.  I left the next morning and never hunted with him again.

I know several people who think it's OK to fill their dad's tag, brother's tag, etc., if they've already used their own tag. I think it's BS. I hunt a lot with my dad, and if I fill my tag then my gun stays at home, and I'm only there to help him or take photos.

There are not enough animals in this state for people to be shooting more than their share

The only way I would ever do that is if was to help out a disabled hunter and if it was legal to do so. I would not tag an animal that somebody else shot or let somebody tag an animal I shot otherwise. If someone is capable to hunt, shoot and kill there own game they should do so. If they put in as much effort as I do they would understand my reasoning.

I love the meat.....but a big part of why I hunt is the thrill. Having everything come together and to close the deal....sitting back and admiring your kill. No way do I want someone else stealing my glory!

No way!  I've been asked that several times, especially when I first started to bowhunt for elk.

Well, I think opinions on this are based on the laws of the land where you were raised, and where you learned to hunt.

Where I am from (Ontario Canada) party hunting is totally legal, and most people belong to a hunt gang or camp. The goal of a camp is to fill  freezers with meat for winter.

Basically, all members hunt until all tags are filled,  or the season ends. Meat is then divided equally amongst all members of the camp. We don't really care about horns, but of course if you shoot a buck with a nice rack that is cool, and something to brag about, but viewed more as a bonus.  Most camps live by the motto, "If it is brown, put it down" meaning we shoot Bucks, Does and YES even Fawns. Real bragging rights go to whomever has the most meat hanging on the pole.  I've taken as many as 3 deer on a single day, and have seen days where another member of the camp has taken more than that. I personally do not see any issue with this providing the number of animals taken does not exceed the number of tags there are for the camp. 

I've posted this to give everyone a different perspective, but all that being said, this is WA state and the rules here are fill your own tag, so end of story.

 It is pretty surprising the differences in regs in different States and Provinces, really send's a mixed message. Rules and regs aside, I feel that it is all about management. If the population can handle party hunting, then it should be legal, simple as that meat is always the goal (for most). The majority of places party hunting is illegal, is really due to lower herd numbers.

It's legal in WI where I'm from and has been going on for years. There was a time when you put in for a doe tag as a group and say you might get one tag for six people.(long before my time) Times have changed a bit now, to damn near limitless tags for individuals, but if it was legal I would have no issues doing it out here. It all tastes the same regardless of who shot it.

I take more pleasure in watching my wife and hunting partners harvest deer than I do harvesting them myself.  Last year on the last day of rifle deer, I was with my wife and my hunting partner.  My wife had her .243 in tow, hunting parntner .308 and myself .270 (I bow hunt, but carry a rifle for yotes, bear and cougar).  A very respectable 3 point muley showed himself mid day and was well within shooting range.  Less than 100 yards.  My wife didn't feel comfortable with the shot because the deer would not stop walking and my hunting parnter could not calm his heart beat (first year hunting).  Never the less neither one got a shot, and it really didn't matter.  It was super exciting and now I get to razz them for years   .  Moral of the story, I could have shot that deer with out a problem, but it would have ruined the moment and taken the sport out of hunting.  The lesson that my wife and hunting parnter would have learned was meat is more important than the thrill of the hunt.

Well i am a disabled hunter and someone can shoot for me but the only way i would let someone shoot/tag my game for me is if i shot it and it runs for a mile+ and down in a hole and i couldn't get to it, then i would let them finish/tag my deer or whatever it was.Other than that i would never.

I just 3 days in Peaches with Tmike and didnt take my bow even though I have my deer tag,  didnt want anyone thinking I was helping him try to fill his tag!

I ABSOLUTELY wouldnt let anyone use my tag...maybe my boys when they get older but before we can get them their own

if it was legal... Id fill every damn tag I could for every person that would let me!!!!

In GA you can kill 12 deer a year and I did that every year for 9 years straight...Id do it here too if legal!!!

If it was legal yes but it isn't here so NO. Wouldn't even do it for my kids because I think that is teaching them the wrong thing.  Now if it was legal I would let them shoot every legal animal they could

I had a bull permit for archery season this year and there was a guy in the next camp that said if I got a shot at a cow to shoot it and he would tag it and split the meat with me.  I told him no way.  I shot a cow and put my tag on it. Maybe I made a mistake shooting a cow when I had a bull permit but I like having the meet in the freezer and its hard to pass a shot on an elk at 14 yards.

Depending on what part of the world you are from, hunting customs vary. If you are from the east coast "party hunting" as it is called is a normal accepted practice. I often have to explain to east coast hunters that "party hunting" is not accepted here. It is actually hard for them to understand why they shouldn't do it since they grew up with "party hunting" being perfectly legal and socially acceptable. Out here in the west it is illegal in every state as far as I know.

It's sort of like spotlighting, which is very acceptable in some parts of the world for many different types of hunting like coons, coyotes, fox, possums, frogs, leopard, etc. But the minute you mention spotlighting, somebody imagines the worst, that you are a deer poacher.

Gutpile did the right thing by avoiding the situation since "party hunting" is illegal in the west. The important thing is to follow the game laws no matter where you live. But I do have to wonder if those guys grew up back east....
