Is it legal for the adult's to carry any birds that the kid's shoot...  or is who ever shot the bird required to carry it ?

You know that is a good question, and i dont have the answer, i had my boys wear there own bird vests and put there birds in them, kinda cooling feeling your bird in your bag. I would email the WDFW and ask them, then print out the response if they say it's ok so if a gamie stops you and has a problem with it you have something to back you.
On a side note, if a gamie stopped you and had a problem then well he needs to get a life

All my kid's are grown and gone, but I"m taking out some friends kid's. This is the first year they'll be hunting, so not sure if the parents have bought them upland vest's or not. If they don't have a vest, I sure want thier first experience to be a fun one, and not a struggle. Would love to show them a great hunt, hunting behind some good bird dog's. Gotta get these kid's hooked on the sport

The kids should feel the weight of the birds in their vests! That is part of the fun and part of the responsibility of hunting. If they can't pack it out, they shouldn't take it! I hope all the youth's hunts have full vests.

Damn...  I regreat the day I turn 70-75..  I really doubt I'd be able to pack out a Elk or moose by myself... by your way of thinkin.. I'm gonna have to give up hunting soon... bet your hunting buddy's really look forward to you being in thier camp...  watchin them do all the work, cus by your way of thinkin.  if ya can't do it by yourself..  ya should'nt  even be there. bet your a barrel of fun. I can see the kid's packin out bird's if thier able..  but if thier having a tough time, don't see where a helping hand would hurt.

I'm sure you can pack birds for them. I never thought about it before but I used to pack out birds for my nephews. I refuse to believe there's a restriction that would not allow you to carry a kids birds. That just wouldn't make sense.

Wayne1, good for you for stepping up and assuring we have future hunters. I have never read anywhere that the hunter must carry out his/her own kill...(accept for razor clams...) 

Carrying the bird is fun for the kids though....maybe you could even just bring some twine and leg tie the birds to their trouser belt....bet the kids would never forget it...

Thats true. They do like carrying there own but if it's a hot day they tire out and may need help. Depends on the age though.

Sorry about sounding like a hardnose, that is not the way I meant to come across. You bet I would carry birds under the conditions of a long hot day, rough terrain, etc. I would also be carrying the food, water, shells, etc from the beginning to make their experience the most enjoyable. I believe they should attempt to pack out their own birds. If it gets tough, I would certainly help and then adjust the next hunt for their abilities.

I also could not find any information on carrying anothers birds out in the field. The regs only mention transporting after the field.

I don't think it's a problem (legally) to carry birds for the kids, as long you're not carrying a gun (obviously), but I know for my boys (10 and 12 yrs old) they LOVE carrying their own birds.  Heck, they used to want to carry all MY birds before they hunted.  In fact all 3 of my boys used to fight over who got to carry the birds, as it seems to be quite the trophy for them to tote around!  Have fun. We'll be out there also.  The boys can't wait for their first crack at pheasants!!  I've created some serious hunting fools and lifetime hunting partners, which is what I dreamed of.  Good luck to all.

i dont see why it would be illegal to carry the birds, a nonhunter can pack elk quarters right? or help draggin the deer?

Thanks for the responces...  I'm just making sure that there is'nt some stupid possesion rule...  Last thing I want is the kids to see a GW writing me a citation, when I'm just there trying to help. Plus would'nt want the kid's being wittness to me telling the GW..  "I did'nt know", when I'm suppose to be setting an example.     Thanks Again

I actually think that it is illegal, the warden would probably have to be in a pretty bad mood to write that ticket, but most states I've hunted in you can't mix the bag limits. It is to ensure each individual is shooting their limit and not the entire party's.....
with that said I don't know for sure but that is what I have always understood it as.

 It is unlawful to:
"Possess wildlife taken by another person unless
you have in possession a written statement
showing name, address, license and/or tag
number, date, county and area it was taken in,
and the signature of the hunter who killed it."

You could carry it for them if you take a secretary and a filing cabinet with you.
I have talked to a fair share of wardens before and most understand that there is the written law and the intended purpose of the law. Like I said, he/she would have to be in a bad mood.

I would agree, but that is the intended vs. the written that I talked about. If you read it in the book it sounds pretty all encompassing. but

Since their allowed 3 birds...  I'll write up enough agreement's before we hit the field...  Just in case they need help toting em..  That way I ought to cover all the bases

Well..  I just received the answer to my question...   e-mailed the WDFW.. and got a reply today from the local GW:

Hello Wayne and Diane, I got your request, but I was off hunting in Idaho. There is no problem carrying game for an individual who takes it legally.  In this case a juvenile shoots a pheasant and wants you to carry it for him.  No problem.  Call me anytime.  If I do not answer, I am usually off.

Sounds good, I would hang on to that letter just in case someone were to interpret the law different. That way you cover yourself.
