Deer falling to iron sights
« on: December 30, 2007, 11:54:34 AM »
I always hunt property that is a combination of sagebrush/rolling hills and some pretty thick stands of Ponderosa pine.  I'm taking a lever gun into the pine this next year, as we always seem to jump something on our way to go glass the hills.  Anyone on this site drop a deer in 2007 with an iron-sighted rifle (not muzzleloader)?

i didnt kill a deer this year with iron sights but for the first 4-5 years of hunting when i was young i killed 4 deer with iron sights, sounds like the same set up you have, i had and old 30-30 lever action and she never let me down, shot straight as a arrow, but they do require some practice, so i say its a good idea but the farthest you would want to shoot would be maybe 125-150, which a deer thought iron sights looks very small at that range lol

I haven't shot a deer w/iron sights in quite a while. A few over the years, when it worked out that way. I do prefer to use a scope for more precise shot placement.

Regards, Guy

1st&2nd deer I ever shot was with a lever action, iron sights.  Last year in Montana, with a .444 marlin, @ 140 yrds down hill.  1st was in Mississippi at age 10, I think it was a 35/40 winchester (long time ago), @ 65 yrds.

I think that iron sight shooting is an almost lost art.  I hit target clays @ 300yrds this year iron, took like 20 tries, but got it.  I also choose my Mod.700 adl .270w cause it was the only 700 w/iron sights.

Sometimes the scope just gets off for some reason, but you can always bank on good iron sights if you practice

look close in this photo of my friend, that's a 30/30 "leever action" cradled in those antlers, taken this year. didn't get one myself with irons but scored a 4x4 whitetail last year with iron"peep" sighted BLR 358 WIN.
