Caribou in WA
«
on:
December 19, 2007, 08:52:06 PM »
I happened upon a herd of Caribou in 1998 just northeast of Republic. Knew it was Caribou as they were herded up and the yellow collars and the funky shape. Anyone else out there see Caribou in WA?

I just called my dad on this. He lived in Tonasket and work and a customs inspector up by republic and never heard of any. So that is very interesting.

I know a guy who lives in North Port that has seen a few and has a couple of sheds from them. He has also sees grizzlies every once in a while up there. He says that both only come down during REALLY harsh winters. I cant remember what the winter was like that year??

you claim to see a woodland caribou at trail head "a". the WDFW, FS, PETA, OHA, greenpeace......everyone eventually hears about it.....prettysoon trailhead "a" is closed, all roads to, from and around trailhead "a" is closed......seen it happen. still a little bitter.
My advice to you is take a picture and enjoy it, but for cryin' out loud don't share it.

I read a short bit in I believe Field and Stream, about Caribou migrating through the northeast corner of the state.

10 and less years ago there was a good start of caribou in the NE corner of WA. and over into Idaho. Now we have grizzlies and wolves and very few if any caribou
Sorta like lets raise chickens then put some foxes in the pen with them.

Nicely put Idabooner. From what I've been told, they're Mtn Caribou from BC. Here's one of their relatives I killed last year in the Itcha Ilgatchuz's. My outfitter told me the Canadian Government transplated some bou outta this herd to Southern BC, NE Wa, Northern Idaho.

the wdfw has said that there is a small herd of woodland caribou that come in and out of washington. they had a program a few years back that got shut down to help save them. i guess there aint enough lichen and the lions are taking there toll on them. i personally do not care about them, and was glad to here that we aint using any more money to try and help them

It's a worthwhile program to protect the woodland caribou however we can. There's still a small herd up in the Selkirks.
