Wind detection gear
« on: September 25, 2009, 10:29:26 AM »
Does anyone have a do it yourself solution or home made thinga-ma-bobber for checking the wind? I generally grab dirt or light dusk on the trail when I see it and flip that up into the air to check wind. Needless to say its not an exact science. I'm sure there is a better, more efficient way using flour or backing soda in a small bottle or something.

Please post what you've made or used to check wind direction.

I have a 35 mm film canister filled with flourescent yarn.  I keep it in my pocket or pinned to my belt.  It has a little x cut in the top which allows me to pull a few strands out at a time.

This time of year I'll throw a bunch of thistle seeds in my pocket if I come across them and it is dry.  Don't wash your pants without emptying the pockets though.

So you're the one spreading the Canadian thistle around.  :chuckle:

Ha!  I actually thought about that when I was picking it this past Saturday.  I am expecting a letter about controlling noxious weeds in my box any day.   :chuckle:

Palerider, actually I have heard that cornstarch in a little bottle is the do it yourselfer trick...  I just spend a few bucks on the odorless powder in them little bottles...cheap...and, it stays dry too....

Lots of great ideas guys thanks! I'm gonna track down some small squeeze bottles and try out the powder idea.
