My fist archery deer!
« on: September 27, 2009, 08:27:38 PM »
I have shot lots of deer with my rifle since i was about 9 years old. Last year was my first year archery hunting at age 16.  I was sitting in the tree stand with my dad in a stand right above me. About 5 o'clock on the opening evening the first deer walked into the field and was workin our way.  About 80 yards out the doe decided to bed down.  We watched it for at least an hour, when we heard a noise 20 yards to my right into some thick forest.  It was moving our way and cought a glimpse of a big doe that stopped just inside the trees not giving me a shot.  She knew somethin was wrong with the situation so i had no choice but to sit and watch her stand there for what seemed like forever!  I tried to calm myself by looking away and thinkin about something else, but then she stepped out and the shaking came back immediately.  I stood up and took the 20 yard shot with my Parker wildfire compound bow.  It was not a prime shot, but the quartering away shot was not bad by any means. I took the shot while shakin like a leaf and immediately knew i hit her far back.  As the arrow hit her in the rump, my spirits sank until i saw that i had hit the femoral artery and she was losing blood like a hose on full blast.  The deer walked 10 yards and layed down giving out a death croak.  We waited till dark, ( because my buddy was hunting the same field, i didnt wanna ruin his hunt) and could only sit back and enjoy the sight of deer filing into the field all night from every direction!  It was awesome going to recover my first archery deer.  I was hooked on archery at that very moment.  We skinned and gutted the deer and realized that my thunderhead broadhead had penetrated all the way into the liver with my bow that was only set at 45 pound draw! (now shooting 60#)

Good for you on your first archery harvest, glad you were able to recover it.
