I am retired Army, I live on the back side by Roy, where on post are you trying to hunt? Have you gone over to NAC yet and seen what training areas are going to be opened?

I have hunted the hell outta that thing. Be prepared to see nothing or a HUGE buck. either can happen in a yr.
If your rifle hunting, its a buck only area. My advice if your open to small bucks is hit the skookumchuk unit. Lots of hunters, and lots of little bucks. Stay put and GLASS you will see a buck.
Asd far as base, not a easy venture for a rookie hunter. Ive shot some brutes out there, but it took a while, and were both last minute of daylight with no where else to go type hunts.
Later,
WB

I used to hunt Fort Lewis seceral years ago. I have found that If you can wait until the last weekend of the modern rifle, The fort opens up the centeral impact area. This area is closed all year becuase of the shooting ranges shooting into that area. The deer are used to the gun fire all year long and the MP's cruise through the roads through out the fort. The deer are used to vehicles. Because nobody is allowed in the centeral impact area most of the deer hang out there. All the times that I have hunted the fort, I haved seen the most deer in this area.

Yeah...can you borrow any artillery if you're hunting on the base?

I don't know much about the area but my biology professor at Portland State told me that areas of the base were really well managed as wild areas.  He was excited about some rare salamander population that lives on the base, on the firing range...something about the shelling and firing that keeps them safe from predators.  Who knew?!

Anyway...let us know how you do.  Good luck!

The best way tohunt the for is to "Still Hunt". Not many clear cuts and lots of small ravines the the tree that are some times hard to see with all the cover.

Did you find out what training areas are open yet??

I have hunted 1-15 quite a bit, the hugher training areas out by yelm, rainer and tenino there is a lot of poaching going on. So have never even bothered in those training areas.
