New to site, new to hunting
« on: September 30, 2009, 06:11:44 PM »
I recently took up hunting (late last year). As a noob to this, I could use a little direction. I have been hiking/climbing my entire life and know the Cascades very well. I am now am pursuing bow hunting. I was out 4 times in Sep. I hiked up to ridge tops down to creek beds and glassed all over. Never even saw an animal. Of course in the early scouting trips I was practically running into them. I guess I wasn't high enough or deep enough to locate them in Sep (both eastside and wetside GMU's). Now looking at the late season. Without giving away your hot spots, would I be well served by going into GMU 101 (Sherman),  204(Okanogan East)? Worst case, I could get one in my backyard (GMU 407), but I would be the devil in my neighborhood, >:( and it isnt much sport to shoot from behind the tool shed.

Those would be good units to hunt, you will have to hike though.
The things that come to those who wait, may be the things left by those who got there first!

I live in 407.  Maybe think about the toolshed if X-mas comes and goes and still no venison in the freezer.  Good luck to you.

You can get decent hunting up here (407 and 418)  I will give the same advice I always give, if you are hunting Okanogan/Methow/Sinlahikan, any of that area, just get away from the roads, I mean miles away from drivable roads, try to get away from hunters, explore a bit, until you find a spot you think looks good, or you just like.  And GLASS, buy a good pair of binos, the best you can afford, since your in Whatcom County, come up to Daves Sports Shop if there is anything you need, binos, gun, anything, lots of good people there, who know what they are talking about.  Good luck, and remember, get away from the roads!
I would rather be a conservative nut job, than a liberal with no nuts, and no job!

welcome to the site.

When hunting them ridges, think more cat less dog.  Use the wind  and hike down the ridges in the afternoon as the bucks are bedded and the wind is usually blowing up the ridgeline.
