Okay, went out this AM with Varmintventilator and had 2 coyotes come running right at us at first light. They got way too close catching us completely off guard, I throw glass up on one at about 20 yards and shot right under him. The second turns and runs to the top of the hill and VV gets a real quick 70 - 80 yard shot and went over that one. Man our day was just not startin' out real well.

So we relocate and set up on a high bluff about 50 feet above the desert floor and about 20 minutes into our stand VV spots a dog out at 462 yards. I was already on the screamer for about ten minutes and began trying to get this one to come closer. He was just standing there listening with some interest but not willing to commit. VV says he's going hunting, so he takes off down along the bottom of the bluff and does the old sneaky sneak on this dog as I keep it's interested in the pup yips. As VV gets closer I watched with great anticipation as the pup just keeps taking a step or two towards our location then sits down with ears perked.

Finally VV is in range with his 6.8 and the pup gets up and starts to wander off. I change up calls and throw a screaming dieing rabbit into the wind and here he comes a little closer with every step. I keep going and suddenly the pup flinches and spins in circles then I hear the report of the 6.8. He had closed the gap to within 200 yards of the coyote and the dog covered the other 50 or so yards to catch a 90gr. TNT mid side thru the ribs.

Off he goes and runs about 150 yards where he finally came to rest. And now for the photo op since VV is a little camera shy he asked that I stand in for him, hope ya'll don't mind.

Nice writeup, nice picture....

I've lost 2 dogs this week and about lost this one.  I've convinced myself that I'm shooting em just a bit high, doing the top of spine stunner and they shake it off and get their feet back under them.  If this fog keeps up, I'm gonna have to take the shotgun tomorrow.

One more for Team Lamar.

High shoulder shot works every time.  Honestly, I don't think I've ever had one take a step with the high shoulder shot with at least a 40gr. bullet as long as it's placed right.

Agreed.

But what I'm talking about is hitting the thoracic vertebrae, (the ribish looking bone above their true spine).  If you hit there, it seems to "stun" them and they can shake it off.  (In my experience)

Got this guy this morning. Didn't have my camera in the field so I grabbed a pic before I hit the road. We hunted hard for two days and put a few on the ground for TDF. All in all it was a great trip for me. I'm on the wet side now. I think I might try and go kill something on sunday. I'm thinking about going around my aunts house in carnation. It would be nice to get a west side dog.

Don't worry Lance I left you plenty! The fog made it tough hunting.

Cory puttin' Team TDF back on the board!  Way to go COry!

Well one of the five of us has to kill something.  :chuckle: I watch the thread everyday hoping to see a coyote from one of my teammates. So far I'm still just watching  :(

I know, I know...  Maybe I can take a little time off between Christmas and New Years...  Good luck over on the slushy side.  Go kill a bunch of them "high-point-value-dogs"....

Two more for Team Machias.  Brokenhand shot one and a guest hunter, Hutch shot the other.

Went out today for about 3.5 hours.  First stand had one come and take a look on the far horizon, he watched for a min or two and bailed.  From that side, my truck was exposed.

Next stand about 4 min into it, I see a flash maybe 70 yards out in the sage.  I hit the squeaker and get out of prone and get ready for a close off hand shot.  He pops up 10 yards away, I turn to shoot about the same time he turns to leave and he goes down.  From there, I hit the KiYi and keep calling to see if there is another.  About 40 seconds later, the dog I shot hops up and starts beating feet.  Looooooong story short, I finally found him again and gave him another.

Third stand nothing.

Fourth stand about 10 min into it I catch a dog coming about 350 yards out.  He is side hilling a canyon, but hops the creek and is on the way.  I popped her about 70 yards.

Fifth stand nothing.

Sixth stand, a decent amount of time into it, I see a dog crossing the creek on his way about 120 yards out.  No idea where he came from or where he went.  I saw him for about 2 seconds and never saw him again.

Last stand scared some mule deer up and on the way out seen a pile of geese.
