667 gmu / FR74 access points
« on: October 02, 2009, 10:50:18 AM »
Wondering if anyone familiar with the area west of HWY7 knows of any access points to the area other than fr74. I would like to come in on bald hill rd., or similar instead of driving all the way around alder and coming in on the 74. I head out on 7 from near the Roy Y.

I thought they gated FS rd 74 at mile 14 or so? It use to circle back into pleasant valley if I remember correctly?

There is no access to that are ayou want with out going through Warehauser Property. WH owns much of the land on the other side of Alder lake and te Nisqually river, so the only way t access the FS area you are talking about is to go around the lake to the 74rd. I knw pleasant vally road is closed just past the camp ground.

If i remember correctly, you can access the from morton area, but do not hold me to it.

There used to be a road that whent through WH property to HWY7 (bridge over the river) but it has been closed for many, many years........

Following the 1000 line in Vail from the gate to the 3000 line will pretty much get you into that same area, at least the more productive part of it that you can't get to from FR 74, I wouldn't bother with driving around the lake to 74. If you are coming from the south there are some great hike in roads north of Morton, if your in to hiking.

On the bald hills side there is a bunch of privately owned land that backs up to vail. Used to have a key to it until WH realized the roads still connected into vail (I stayed on the private piece). Now they put a new gate in front of the landowners gate, and the landowner is the only one allowed to have a key to the WH gate.

Just wondering, Is the Vail gates open on the weekends before regular rifle season? My son drew a youth any deer tag unit 667 which starts this weekend Oct 10th. Is there a # for warehauser to find out if it is open. Any info appreciated.

They open the main gate for youth weekend, but there is a WeyCo employee with a sign in sheet at the gate.  You have to have the youth permit holder in the vehicle with you.

It's a great thing to only let the kids in, otherwise everyone and their brother would be up there trying to scout and push all the deer out of the clearcuts from the kids.

In my last year of eligibility for drawing that tag, I did, but WeyCo had some *censored* woman running Vail.  She decided to flex her might and lock us kids out.  We had to walk in!  Being 16 it wasn't -that- bad for me, but I felt bad for the 10-12 year olds that didn't have the energy to walk in more than a mile or two.  Thankfully the woman got transferred to some office from what I heard last because she was running Vail into the ground.

All three roads that take you up there around Mineral are washed out.:(  They have 6 or 7 bridges around the randle area that are probably gettting fixed before these do.  So might be awhile.  Should be good for the deer numbers though.

Hmm.. so the only real access is from the south? Makes the drive even farther  :(

So no other way to enter from the nisqually side eh? That old wooden bridge was broken more than 10 years ago when i ventured down there, i am assuming its still out of commission (where the mashel meets the nisqually).

So bald hill rd, sorenson and weyerhauser truck road are all gated?
