Rifle hunting Bethel Unit for elk
« on: October 05, 2009, 08:18:52 PM »
My daughter has decited she wants to hunt elk this year. I have friends that hunt the Bethel Unit and we will be camping with them. We are only being able to hunt for opening weekend plus a couple of extra days (my daughter has priop commitment for the second weekend).

I my self am not familular with the unit, I hunt Nile, Little Naches (when i can draw a tag), or Rimrock for archery and am looking for some tips on places to look for elk.
I guess we will be caming someplace in the Little RattleSnake area (not exactly sure yet).

I am planning on heading over to the area the weekend of the 24th to do some scouting, and getting familular with the area (we will be up at Entiat deer hunting the prior weekend).

Any tips will be greatly appricated. Feel free to PM me or Rocky (my daughter) with any info.

Pete

Never hunted it, just fished rattlesnake creek a few times this summer. Sure looks like a good great area for elk. I didn't see anything when I was up there, mainly because I wasn't looking, and I wasn't up there early or late. But if I were to go hunt up there for the first time, I would look into the McDaniel lake and surrounding areas, like meeks table. I'm sure the place gets hammered during modern, so be ready for that. Of course the people you are hunting with probably know some places to start also. :twocents:

270, I have been the area you are talking about, once, and thought there would be many people up there.

As for th eguys i am going to be camped with, they are ging to help and point us in the wright direction, but i would like to do some on my own and not rely completely on them.

I would like t show up in camp and have an idea where i will be going and not just guess, after all, I am out to get my daughter and elk (or at least see some elk), not me.

Besides, we will be talking (270shooter) more about yotes this winter. I know, you know, your *censored* about yotes  ;)

I know a few guys that get one every year there. They pack a lunch and get on the steepest thickest place with some visibility and stay put.
Carry lots of ammo, one day I heard crashing and shooting coming right me pow pow p p p p p p pow pow pow. I hit the dirt, later the guy came back up bragging he shot the elk 17 times.  I have also heard of a few that cruise the road after dark when there are less hunters out.
