10-2 Washington Moose continued
« on: October 05, 2009, 10:39:29 PM »
Under the topic 10-2 Washington Moose, a good friend posted a picture of my moose that I text messaged to him from the mountain.  He encouraged me to check out this site and it is great!  Many have asked for a better picture and a story.  Under Toby's post I placed a good picture and then started this new topic.

Story:  Lifetime bowhunting goal--shoot a Bull Moose.  Under the guidance of a good friend and his son we started our hunt on the second day of the season.  Took the government road to the top of Mica, headed east.  Stopped short of a good clearcut.  Just at light we can hear a cow and a bull in the bottom of the creek.  We head up the road to check out a little draw at the head of the clear cut.  Then holly hell broke loose in the clear cut below.  Runnning back to check it out, we see a dandy bull and a cow.  They are making all kinds of noise.  We get the wind right and slip into the cut.  Making our way around a nob in the cut we spot a little bull and a cow, then another cow; where did the big bull go?  We heard some noise in the creek down below, must be him, right??  As we start to slip down; one bull grunted from above us.  Seriously?? Could he gotten above us??  We start to make our way up to the call.  My buddies son says stop!  I see horns in the bush 25 yards in front of us.  Using a scapula off his bull from six years ago, my buddy starts to hold it up in the air like a set of horns.  He then makes some grunts and groans.  We are in one serious game of got you pegged!  If the bull goes to the left we are dead downwind and done.  If he goes to the right we have a chance.  After what seems to be 10 lifetimes the bull goes to the right.  Draw!!! The bull enters my first shooting lane, does not stop.  I was tempted to shoot but did not.  The bull hits the second lane, my buddy did everything but sing to the bull to make him stop.  Finally he stopped, 27 yards.  The arrow slid in just behind the shoulder, 1/3 up from the bottom of the chest, slightly quartering away.  He took three steps opened his mouth and blood poured out.  Sixty yards later he piled up in a small patch of tree.  Best of all, my buddies son captured it on video!  The hunt lasted all of about 30 minutes from start to finish.  What a way to fill a liftime tag! Only one regret, my bowhunting partner could not be there that morning.  What are the odds that a 2 month season would end in a half hour?

Hey Deke, we were right above you right after your buddy Shane went back to the quads.  We saw your "decoy".  This was real close to where my wife ended up taking her moose, and I think really close to Shane (WA) as well.  In 2001 there were 3 moose taken in the same general spot as well.  Definitely a sucessful hillside!  We saw you guys at the gate as well when we were going up for my wifes moose.  Congrats!
