North Carolinian draws a Hangman A tag

 Here are some photos of a Gentleman who from North Carolina has been putting in for Moose here for the last 12 years and this year drew it.

 He had seen Ridgerunner's article in a Magazine after he had success last year and published the story. He had contacted him to see if perhaps he was intrested in showing him the area and perhaps going along to assist. Being from the wrong side of the state. LOL. Ridgerunner suggested that he contact me. After several phone calls and Emails we had set a plan. I was going to pick him and show him the area.

 We scouted the day before the season and then started hunting the opener. We had the opportunities to cross paths with several members from this site. Both old members and some new members that have posted. We watched Zack and his family working their bull from above and the we also saw Deke with their Bull and talked to Cleve and Wanttohuntmore with his wife and father.

 We saw Moose every day with the exception of Sunday that we had to put rocks in our pockets to keep from getting blown off the hill.

The first two photo's are of a bull we called in the second photo the bull was less than 15 feet away!! tearing up brush. He passed on him.

That is another dandy bull.  My dad drew a cow tag for that unit a few years back and we had a great time getting his cow in that unit.  After all these nice bulls going down in that unit, it may start getting a few more people applying for it.......

Anyway, congrats to the NC hunter.  That is a great bull.  That was nice of you to show him around too.

That second picture is something else, man that bull was right on top of you guys.  I think I would have had to change underwear after having a bull come in that close.  WOW!

Good looking bull.Is the bull in the picture the one you shot? That takes some dedication to put in for WA moose if you are a non res. With such bad odds I wonder how many non res hunters have drawn moose tags.

every thing for him was 10x the mony!!! even the entry! the first bull we passed on. I showed him the site and every evening after we got back to the barn he would go and look at the posting's for Moose!

great job. but i have to wonder why put in for so long on a washington moose if you live that far away. you've got to think it would be just about the same cost for him to go to Canada on a guided moose hunt after it was all said and done and not have to wait for a tag. i mean how much do they charge out of staters for the draw X 12 years + travel and shipping expense +out of state tag once he finally drew. was it just that he wanted a washington moose?

I helped Brian out last year with his moose hunt and I did not even have a tag and now I'm kind of hooked on moose. awesome animals to hunt.

It actually is pretty cheap for him...cheaper than I thought, anyway. The travel and shipping expense will be roughly the same anywhere, so I'll leave that out.  For the app and tag, presently it only costs them $55 to apply, plus you have to buy the $1100 license/tag once drawn.  In present day dollars, that's only $660 (for 12 years of apps) plus $1100, or $1760.  Roughly the same you'll pay should you get drawn in Idaho.  Problem is, he could also apply forever and not draw one of those tags.  Nonetheless, makes me think we should institute a NR cap on the OIL tags, like every other state.  We pay $75 to apply each year in WY, for example, but we're subject to NR caps.

The non-res special permit application is $55 and the moose license & tag for non-resident is $1100.  The section I read didn't clarify whether or not you need to front the $1100 or not.

You don't need to first buy a license to apply for moose.  I think it is the same way for sheep and goat too.

Yeah that's because there is no "license."  Just the tag, which only has to be purchased if drawn.

no need to buy a license ahead of time in order to apply for any of the OIL tags. once you draw, then it is 10x what we pay for non-res.
for deer, elk and bear you have to buy licenses ahead of time.

That's a real cool story.  I like seeing residents get drawn, but he's an American and seems like he's paid his dues and earned the right to venture anywhere he wants in the greatest country on earth.  Thanks for helping an old timer out those of you who were involved.

Nothing against any non-residents that apply for our moose tags, but I do think it should be limited to residents only.

Like WA, eevery other state in the west (at least that I know of) jacks up the NR prices.  But WA is the only one that I know if that doesn't have NR caps.  I don't have a problem on the deer and elk side...if they want to front all that $$ to buy a license, then so be it.  But $55 a year to build OIL points is nothing anywhere...and it's particularly nothing when you don't have a NR cap.  I'm usually not one to whine about WDFW, but this seems out of whack to me.

If he has been applying that long, then he deserves it.  It used to cost alot more for all of us.  I'm happy for him though I can understand the competition.  He looks like a nice man and I am happy he is smiling.   One of these days I hope to draw a new hampshire tag or a Maine tag.  There are no cap limits for NR and their tags are 1/4 what ours cost or at least a third.   I hope they like or treat me as well as we have extended courtesy to this gentleman.

I think/thought you HAD to purchase the hunting license first? I applied once before I had a license, and got a letter saying I just donated my money becasue of not having a license??? Confused on this one....its been a while.

Regardless, they hunted hard, got some great photos and some memories.

I do know that back when I was a memeber of the Inland Wildlife Council, we met with the F & G Department, and it was always amazing to me that they have thought that we have as much hunting opportunity as Montana, Wyoming, Colorado or even Idaho. Amazing, isn't it? But guys, this is an altogether off-topic subject and we should continue the discussion elsewere and NOT hijack this thread!

i never had a question to if he "Deserved" to hunt in washington, i was just kinda surprised that some one from so far away would put that much time into a Washington moose hunt when you could go a couple hours north and hunt moos all you want and not have the 12 year wait. washington isn't really the moose destination of north America after all.

Applying and hunting for moose in the lower 48, even for non-residents is much cheaper than hunting in Canada for a bull.  The trick is to get drawn.  Tell him congrats!

Non res alien in Canada is a minimium of about 6 grand.  Often upwards of 10 grand.   Washington is 55 out of pocket for a chance and only a 1,000+ if drawn.  idaho is 150+ out of pocket and then 2 grand if drawn.  utah is 80 out of pocket and then about a grand if drawn.  Colorado you have to front the money for three years before you are even eligible.  I think its around 1800 out of pocket up front, all refunded but 5.   Montana is 750 up front and you get most of it back.  Wyoming is 75 out of pocket and then a thousand or so up front but you get all but the 75 back.    In reallity Wa odds aren't that bad.

Congrats to the hunter. His dedication paid off. I also like seeing Wa residents getting the OIL tags, but this guy paid the money year after year and got lucky just like me. Good for him. But I would like to see the WDFW allocate a minimum percent of OIL tags for non residents like other states do. But then the WDFW has always been behind other states on their wildlife management. Sorry to thead jack. Congrats on the awesome bull!

I'm confused everyone is wanting either to have a minimum amount of tags or no Non-res tags. Could somebody else let me know if they have heard of any other out of staters or is this the first?
There has also sentiment about having them up front the money. OK so then let's go back to upfront money for everyone. That way it's fair for all.
I do believe that you will be seeing him again with the amount of points he has for both sheep and goats
