Well i guess i really do need to take you up on your offer to come to Alaska. You pretty much seem to kill everything you go after. I guess the triathlon training you did when you lived here helped you prepare for that steep country. It sue beats shooting ducks in Moses Lake. Anyway, good Job, nice bear, and good luck with whatever else you have a tag for. Next time your in Washington let me know we have allot of catching up to do.

Some story.....

Your right the fishing up here is tremendous and it's almost not really fun anymore for me.  I just haul em in for food.  Every once in awhile I hook into something that really gets me excited 40+ King or Giant Halibut.  I'm ruined for fishing.

The day I scored on this bear I was heading back into a salmon stream for Coho to jar.  I had a bear tag and was all registered with the regional conservation department of the ADF&G.  My partner asked what time we should leave for our fishing trip and I said early so at least we might have a chance and spotting a bear.

Turns out thats just what happened.  At first light we were just stopping and shutting down the engines when I spotted him on the beach.  He hit the deck and tried hidding in some tall grasses.  I told my partner where he was and he couldn't even see him and I only knew where he was because of just a momentary peek. 

I told him I wanted to take a better look at him so I got dropped off with my rifle and some binos.  I worked the wind but it was really really calm and I couldn't quite make out the exact direction.  Slowly I creeped up within 75 yrds of this bear and was laying prone in a small outcropping of trees.  I took as much time as available to look him over really good with my 12x binos to ensure he was male and had a quality coat.  I wasn't really excited about his size though.  So just enjoying the moment and a successful stalk suddenly he lifted his nose and must have winded me.  He was heading for the trees.  My oportunity to think was being rushed.  I leveled on his heart and sent the heat.  He ran directly into the trees and knocked over a few small ones in the process and collapsed within 15 yrds of the point of impact with a well placed heart shot.  We took some photos, peeled the bark, loaded him up in the boat and went Coho fishing.  We scored on some great fish and went home at around 3pm.  I spent the next two days fleshing and preping the hide for the tannery.  He'll be a rug and It should be done by next June.  He squares at a little over 8' but honestly I nevery put a tape to him I just kinda spread my arms and I've got a 6' arm span and he was two foot past that both dimensions. 

I hope you guys enjoy the story.  Thankfully it's not too exciting and one well executed stalk and shot produced a wonderful trophy for my family to enjoy.  It also reduced the predation on deer in my favorite deer hunting region.  In fact just this past week I got a nice buck not 300yrds from where I shot that bear.

It's good to be an American and I've very grateful for all the National Forest we are fortunate enough to hunt.
