Where are the bears?
« on: October 12, 2009, 10:26:31 AM »
This is my first year putting in some real time at bear hunting. I've been out a couple times a week since the season started, glassing clearcuts filled with berries, some near watering holes. I have even tried using a rabbit distress to call. The area where I have been hunting is public land and I know of a few people who have shot bears in there in the past couple years. I have looked up and down hillsides and on game trails and haven't been able to locate and scat or sign. I'm starting to get a little frustrated and I only have a few more weeks to fill my tag.  :bash: The weather is starting to cool quite drastically and the berries are starting to disappear. I'm starting to wonder if I need to start looking in other places for my bear. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The later it gets in the fall, the harder it is going to be to pinpoint the bears. Since food sources are becoming scarce (berries are bye bye), bears are less concentrated. However, they are looking for food all the time bout now, fattening up for winter.

Dont get frustrated. It takes time to lock down bears sometimes. Look for stumps that they could tear into....any left over berry patches (there are still some around)...etc.

Keep calling, that might be a good bet for you this time of year.  Keep at it. You'll never find one sitting in the house. ;)

Good luck!

Rite now is the best time to find them up high, they are looking for any type of food out there.  Stay at snow line and you will find them.

I remember from last year when my dad drew the 49 degrees north moose tag. we saw a couple big giant cinnamon phased black bears up aroun little Calispel peak. i think thats how you spell it. It was around the first week of october (so around right now this time of year) and the bears were up high and they were in some big berry patches or tearin up stumps.

i like to think ive got them down, seen 4 since spring and coulda shot 2, but ive had to spend alota time out in the woods in some remote places. the best thing for me is to hit the high country, that tends to be where i see my bears and its a good way to get away from people. id hit the food sources hard these last weeks of the season

by the way saylean is the bear guy so dont listen to what he says, all he has to do is drive out in the woods for a min or two and one climbs into his rig :chuckle:
