Whitetails in Napavine?
« on: October 15, 2009, 11:21:55 AM »
I was out this morning scouting a local pond for duck hunting. There was obvious deer in the area from the sign and low and behold I jumped a whitetail deer. I was shocked from my understanding there are no whitetail at all in this area. The deers cape was a little dark, maybe a crossbreed? But it certainly had the signature tail up in the air. I tried to get my cell phone out for a photo but not quick enough. Has anyone else seen whitetail on the westside? I know there is a small population down on the columbia but other than that.

columbia white tail, not alot of them but there are a few spread around. I have seen them all the way up to the Cow creek bridge on spirit lake HWY. I live in the stella unit and see one on my place once in a while. Just remember you can not shoot them.

It wouldn't surprise me.  I've seen some deer do that, including blacktails.  I've read some demographics of where the columbian whitetail was before the pioneers, and it looks like they were all the way up the puget sound.  Because of that I believe that the genetics could still be showing themselves in deer all over w.Wa.  I have a 6x7 I shot in 91 in that general area, that looks very much like a whitetail antlers, but the body looked more like a muley (big), tail was a blacktail.
