Buckshot VS Slug
« on: October 13, 2009, 07:51:17 PM »
Just wanting some opinions on Buckshot Vs Slugs. We may end up doing some Island hunting and just wondering what and why everyone uses?
Thanks

buck shot always first , two then chase with a slug. I use to shot a mossberg 500 with a 20 slugger barrell kill quite a few deer with buck shot out to 50 yards , it only takes one of those .32 cal 00 buck to kill a deer , then a sabot in the back incase they stop to take a look. If you island hunt pretend your hunting rabits they are real sneaky. even back track some times they get up on your second or third time through a spot , good luck.

I used to do buck shot then slug as well.  Shot many deer with the good old shotgun.  The Battle Ground Unit used to have a long modern season either sex.  We would always get our deer while duck hunting.  Now days you will have to carry the heavy steel buck shot or get a ticket if you have lead shot on you.  I know that I could shoot the 3" slugs out to 100 yards.  It was about 13-16 inches low on the norm.
Cut em!
It's not the shells!  It's the shooter!

Thanks for the input on the slugs. We have had a few friends talk about their deer and they got them with buck shot. We have just never used it.
And for the muzzy comment, we have 2. It's just my 10 year old and myslef(mom) don't feel comfortable yet shooting one.. so, that is up to my hubby and my older boy this year. :P thanks.

only reason for buckshot on a deer is if your using dogs to hunt them...thats really the only time Ive used BS for deer!

Wanna clear it up?  come shoot my moss 835 with rifled slug barrel and blackhawk recoil reducing AR style stock...we will put a dozen or so slugs in a paper plate at 150 yards....that will clear it up! ;)

Use slugs.  I saw three deer lost to buckshot my first season.  All shot in the head and two of the three were shot twice.

I've only hunted this way once. I used 00 buck and had no problem. Dropped him one shot. Of course I could of jumped out of the treestand onto his back  :chuckle:

Seems like it's buckshot up close and slugs for longer shots. The last thing I want is to injure an animal and send the day looking for it. I guess just make sure we're close, right?

Hunted deer for 15 years on the east coast . All shotgun only areas. I saw a lot of deer wounded by buckshot. I know it will work but slugs are much more effective. Many good brands of slugs out there now

I shot my first deer on the Islands.. using a rifled slug. There are far more knowledable hunters here as far as ballistics and what not but my two cents is that buckshot stands to ruin too much meat, and doesn't seem sporting to me.

Most of you know I am from the South (Alabama).  I grew up using buckshot only because of the land our family owns.  Hardly any spots are open enough to use a rifle.  So, I have killed close to ten deer with a shotgun, some with a 16 gauge and more with a 12 gauge.  All have been with 00 buckshot.  My first two deer I killed (with the 16 gauge) were both at about 50 to 60 yards.  They both fell on the spot with good shots behind their front shoulder..both on a dead run.

One thing to remember is that even with buckshot YOU DO HAVE TO AIM.  Even though you have X number of pellets, they do stay pretty tight packed.  Put the bead right behind the front shoulder.  Taking a head shot is just not ethical but thats just my :twocents:

Best thing to do is set up a cardboard box and check your pattern.  I can't speak for slugs because I have never killed or attempted to kill a deer using one.
