Oxygen absorbers
« on: October 15, 2009, 06:49:06 AM »
Not sure if you guys have seen this product. Oxygen absorbers are great for eliminating rust and preventing bacteria growth. Most of these absorb both O2 and CO2. The two main brands are: suborbantsystems and Oxyfree 504. They come in strips of small packets. I keep a few in my gun case and throw a few in my rifle bag. Check them out.   http://www.sorbentsystems.com/order_O2.html?gclid=CK7hzaWXv50CFR4UagodMyD4jQ

Dave,
I haven't done much research into oxygen absorbers but I have been looking for a good place to buy moisture absorbers. mainly for my ammo cans so they'll be nice and dry come doomsday. Know a good source?

I have been collecting silica gel for some time, placing it in a glass jar with a tight fitting lid. Everything comes with a little packet of silca gel these days.
I drilled holes in the lid to capture moisture. Every month I spread the silaca gel crystals out on a cookie sheet and bake in the oven at 200 degrees F for about 1 hour to evaporate the stored moisture. These moisture absorbers are called desiccants. You can buy them online pretty cheaply. The commercial brands are pink and turn blue as they absorb moisture. Bake them until they turn pink again and use over and over.
However, I believe the new Oxygen absorbers are better. Oxygen is what causes rust, not moisture. That's why the call rust - oxidizing. Reduce the oxygen and you reduce the rust. The best thing is to use both. I've started to see more and more food and electronic devices shipping with oxygen absorbers instead of moisture absorbers.

I have 140 pounds of oxygen obsorbant in my house. He's 19 and still "looking" for a job. :dunno: If you have any employment leads let me know. :bash: He's tired of hearing me tell him about when I was 13 mowing lawns and doing a paper-route... and how excited I was when I finally started making $1/hour. Hopefully he'll finally get his enlistment paperwork finished, then I'll have more room to store guns (the wife doesn't know that part yet)
