To me the cali is,written about on the web about them, done some research on what the hell this sheep actually is. Who cares about this state record book here, some independant from OR came up with an idea and just publishes it and they cannot even get that right lol, they are not recognized by P&Y or B&C , they are not sought after by anyone who is after a slam, they want a Rocky not a cali. SCI lol I will take a Rocky  :chuckle: so easy to get people riled up on here  :P

I'm really not trying to dig at you shane , It's just sheep are to me what moose is too you. I don't claim any expertese in judging them either , My concern is that I'll see what looks real good to me and end up shooting the wrong ram . I really have appreciated all the help the members of the forum have given me , no doubt I've learned more than I could have ever expected. thanks again guys .Coach

I assume he thinks they suck so bad he doesn't apply for them.  GOing to be pretty funny when he draws the tag in two years and has to eat even more crow.  He should be pretty accustomed to the taste by now.

Your just "riled up" Shane because people called your BS on your 140 class moose.  I could care less about your opinion but maybe someone else can gain some knowledge about the issue...

B&C doesn't want to figure out what the boundary is with them as they overlap rocky sheep and have hibridized in a few areas.  Therefore, someone could end up with a mostly rocky sheep and it might be in a cali area.  See the problem?  Also, transplants have varied where they have put both in various areas.  It creates too much of an issue figuring out the boundary.

If you say the word slam then I think you mean Grand Slam.  If you have ever been a member, like me, you would know that tons of people finish their slam with a cali sheep.  It's all over their records and they refer to them as cali sheep.  In fact, many memmbers try to get one of each:  rocky, california, desert, dall, stone, and fannin.  http://www.wildsheep.org/sheep/north_american.htm  Once again, you tout something on the internet and don't think someone will call your BS.  In fact, B&C is about the only organization that doesn't recognize the cali sheep and even they recognize they are a different subspecies but doesn't know how to vibe the problems I've listed above.  This isn't a unique problem...benchleg blacktail, roosevelt elk in the cascades, etc.  You know, they have had the same problems in Russia with the different sub-species of sheep there as well.  There is overlap and it becomes difficult to recognize what is what.

Unless you plan on pulling the 1 Asotin tag, cali is all you're going to get around here.

Here is a whole sheep thread on guys wanting to finish their "North America 5 Slam" with a cali sheep and they are dying to get one...

I will keep trying to get drawn and I would shoot that sheep or even a smaller one need be, I don't care what subspecies it is. Don't get me wrong, I would love to get one in the record books.....But is that why I hunt...Nope. Nice pics guys

Thank's
Pope well put, I think your passion is awsome . If I could choose You and Bone would be the next to draw . Thanks for clarifiying the whole Cali sub species dilema. I truely treasure my oppourtunity to hunt one and could careless what others think. Kinda like saying a 125 blacktail isn't worth shooting because he's not a 180inch muley. Coach

Well I guess I missed whatever is causing the animosity towards SHANE WA?  Regardless, it seems obvious to me he was just being sarcastic regarding Cali's.  Maybe not?

coachcw, try not to concern yourself too much with score.  You are not hunting in an area that has B&C rams, so a better measurement of success would be killing a good representative of that herd.  The memories of this hunt will be the true trophy, and you will never forget it.  Just don't shoot until you are comfortable with it being the ram you want and will love forever.  It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.

Well I guess I missed whatever is causing the animosity towards SHANE WA?

Maybe we aren't being fair.   :dunno:  Maybe we should just nuke all of this and stop the nonsense?  I'm kind of biased on this because I followed the original thread where Shane started all this.  He was just really rude and arrogant.  Here were some of his quotes and maybe this will help bring the animosity into context:

Shane:

"I am in the 3 forks unit all of the time, you couldnt tag a big bull? give me a break.I see 2 or 3 50" bulls every time I am in there. The bull in the road I wouldnt even consider a shooter in that unit.Sounds like a lame hunter to me"

"Nope not to me, If I draw a tag here I will shoot a state record and hopefully a world record.A set of sheds found here on June 3 are on there way to be scored as the new world record sheds, they also found another set similiar but a little smaller. My buddy has a set that scored around 200". If it was down to the last 2 days I would shoot that bull.People see pics of moose harvested, most tag holders shoot the first bull they see or they do not scout enough to know what is running around here.I see monster bull moose around here all of the time,I know where a monster is right now in the huckleberry unit.I cant even begin to grasp the concept of hunting 30 days and couldnt shoot a big bull, all I have to say is WOW and what a disappointment for the hunter."

"Where do you guys live? West side of the state, that would explain it all.You guys act like moose hunting is hard.Another question have you ever hiked the mountains in the selkirk,49 and huckleberry? There isnt a trip to these mountains where i dont see big bulls.200 inches is being fair,if you want would you like his e-mail? maybe you could talk to him yourself. The sheds found this year are 240+ and I have seen them in person. Its ok to be jealous.
