First bow kill.
« on: December 28, 2007, 08:39:39 PM »
My best friend and I have been hunting these cornfields near his house in a somewhat urban area for about a month off and on.  We have seen a couple of blacktail bucks one was real nice.  He also saw a monster blacktail when he went out scouting.  Well anyways we have seen probally 20 does to go with the few bucks and today was my last day to hunt this year so I said that I would shoot any deer as long as it wasn't a fawn.  Tonight with about 10 minutes of light left to shoot we spotted a doe about 30 yards away from us in the brush.  So I decided that I was going to shoot. I had to fine a shooting lane.  I had to shoot kneeling down through a gap in the brush the size of a basketball.  I made the shot, a good one it went through both lungs.  The deer was kicking and thrashing about.  So I put another arrow in her through the heart and finished her off.

It looked like a descent size doe all by herself.  But when i got up to her she seemed little.  My 14 year old best friend and I were able to drag it a couple of miles or so easily and we gutted it by ourself, and it was both our first time cleaning an animal without any help..  I was just curios what the average blacktail doe weighs.

The fun part was calling up my dad and asking him to come pick me up in the truck.  He had quite the grin on his face when he knocked on the door.

Congrats!

I can tell ya that after dozens of deer with a bow... I still get "buck" fever shooting a scrawny doe with my bow.

Did ya take any pics?

Congrats on a heck of an accomplishment. It's not easy taking critters with archery tackle and you guys doing it all  on your own is even better. I think the avg B-tail doe is around 90 lbs.

Which means by the time you are done boning it out and wrapping you will average about 30 pounds of meat.
Still a heck of an accomplishment I remember my first 4 or 5 with Archery equipment were doe's. Good job!

Thanks guys,

I was at a wrestling tournament all day yesterday and right when my dad and I got home we went to work skinning it.  That was our first time doing that all by ourself also.  My dad has shot 2 deer before and I have shot 1 and both of us have had help skinning the deer.  We aren't really set up here for dealing with a deer so we had it hanging from my weightlifting machine in the garage.  But we got it done and it turned out great.
