2 for 2 (Wife's First deer)
« on: October 18, 2009, 04:48:22 PM »
Opening day - continued success for our household.....

Deer 1:

The morning started off with my dad and his buddy at the backend of the place - our annual routine.  Since I had already killed my buck, I was the rover.  I decided to stay high and watch the push.   I glass for about an hour and saw 5 or 6 legal bucks.  One decent 24" three point that I thought would be a good buck for our buddy.   I climbed up on their vantage and saw them crest the ridge about 700 yards out.  I sprinted over and told them about the big three-point.  We headed over into the draw that the buck had run into when 4 bucks came over the ridge - three legal and one shooter.   They came over two little ridges and presented a 200 yard broadside shot - boom!  A nice 4-point muley down and a personal best for our buddy (Top Pic).

Deer 2:

My wife has been severly sick this past week (almost didn't get to go!)  She rested most of the day Saturday and decided to head out for a short, easy hunt behind the house at about 4 p.m..  We loaded up the truck and drove to the top of the hill.  My plan was to work a couple of draws that traditionally hold good deer after opening morning.   I worked across the top of the first draw (100 yards from the pickup) and looked down into the rocky bottom.  I am suprised to see a nice 4-point looking up at me.  I had to smile - this is her first deer hunt and we are just minutes into it.......waaaayyyy too easy!  I tell her to get down behind the 300 WM that I have set up for her.  She gets behind it and I adjust the bi-pod to the correct level.  "Can you see him?", I ask.   "Yeah" she replies.  I range him at 224 yards.  He is facing us at and it is a steep downhill angle.  I want him to turn, but he is frozen.  10 minutes go by, my wife is getting eye strain from time to time, but remaining remarkably calm!   I can tell that he is not going to turn.  Finally, he turns his head and reveals his brisket - "Hold dead center on his brisket and squeeze the trigger....BOOM!  He drops from sight!   She is jumping and screaming....hugs are exchanged.    My dad and his buddy are all grins....."do you know what you just did, they ask?"  She is all smiles as well.   A great buck - especially for her first!   It was an opening day to remember.....

I take it the bergers worked!  nice job.

The internal damage was something to behold!  A 190 Berger at 3100 fps does the trick.   My dad wanted her to use the .243 but I wanted ft-lbs......Basically, I wanted to increase the odds of an impact kill to ensure a great experience for her.   The thing she was most impressed with was the "wwwhhhaaaapppp".   She is still saying "now I know what you guys are talking about." :chuckle:  Pretty cool!
