2009 Mt Hull Sheep
«
on:
October 18, 2009, 09:10:06 PM »
I Haven’t posted before. my name is Pete I was selected for the Mt. Hull sheep tag (14 preference points). We went over to scout the area in late July. We saw no sheep, 100 degrees out!!!!. But we were able to gain access thru private property at the base of the Mt. I talked to the game dept. biologist . Both the biologist and local landowners were very helpful. I headed back over with friends Brian, Cal and Don 3 days before the season opener Sept. 15. We spent the next three days glassing until our eyes went funny. We found four bachelor groups about 25 rams total. One group of 5 appeared to have the 2 biggest rams. Cal and I went up opening morning thru the rocks to the area where we had seen the biggest rams. 3.5 hours up we looked out of the draw we were in thinking we were still below the rams only to see a ram looking up at us at 50 yards. We heard the sheep moving away , we dropped our daypacks and ran 200 yards to a small knob where I set up for a possible shot. The rams headed uphill and came back into view at 190 yards. They stopped to look back at us, 18 rams bunched up in a area the size of my pickup. No shot but plenty of time to look them over. It would have been quite a picture (cameras were still in our daypacks). After several minutes the group headed away led by the largest ram. At 205 yards he turned and looked towards us while standing on a rock the classic bighorn pose. A big mistake for a nice ram I was able to anchor him with a shot from my 270.
Taxidermist unofficial green score 169 4/8
Much thanks to Brian, Cal and Don for all their help! It was a hunt I will never forget. We would be happy to share our info and help whomever gets drawn in the future.
