Don't know if you can biuld those type of lures. I would look for them on sale or close out sales. Sometimes at the Puyallup Show you can buy all kinds of plugs really cheap. Anyway buy them and try painting them yer own colors. A good book to get you going would be "The Master Angler."

Now spinners can be biult. ;)

Is the taste of the bait worth the sting of the hook twice?

As a teenager, I spent 10 plus hours building a rapala style crank.  Used balsa wood.  All I can say about it's fishability, was that it floated!  Netcraft has some decent lure building stuff.

I believe radio shack.  They came in smaller sticks, and I glued nine together to get me a starting block.

Larry Dahlberg from "The Hunt For Big Fish" does some pretty neat stuff with making molds. Try this Google Search: larry dahlberg lure making   - that should get you some info.
May that for which I prepare never come to pass.

you can get carving wood at places like michaels(craft stores).  defnitely don't expect to save any time or money, but you can create some cool stuff if you have the knack.

i stick to building spinners, since you can build them a lot cheaper than buying.
you can still get gas in heaven, and a drink in kingdom come,
in the meantime, i'll be cleaning my gun
