To Wait Or Not To Wait
« on: October 20, 2009, 07:19:02 PM »
We have three willipa hills 506 muzzle elk tags, the tag runs from Nov 19th to Dec 15th.  I just notice that Nov 19 is the start of late buck in that unit.  So for the first four days rifle hunters will be out and about.  Should I wait until after the late buck season,  or just go and "smoke" one out.   :dunno:

If your not familiar with this unit,  it is thick and most of the deer hunters I have seen around the area road hunt.  Do I risk it :yike:

Yea, I would start while the deer hunters are still there. Mostly road hunters? Get back off the road far enough and they wont make a bit of difference.

I would start early you have the tag the deer hunters don;t. I have hunted it for years and have been there the last couple of days looking for a buck for a friend and have seen lots of elk. I would scout and be there.

i archery hunt that unit and i say go for it, ive been there during rifle elk season last year and its a zoo so i can imagine anytime rifle season is open its not much different.

your best bet is to pack your mountain bike and go even deeper in, atleast a few miles. passed locked gates. we use mountain bikes during archery and its been the most effective way of traveling and finding elk. with the amount of road hunters there will be significantly less people on bicycles or even pass the gates in areas. if you get in some nice deeper, higher, areas its a lead slinger's paradise. so with that said grab a bike and get in there opening day.

and as a bit of inspiration heres my bull from 506 this year! GO GET EM AND GOOD LUCK!!!

Just go for it.  Your perfectly legal so I wouldn't worry about it.  Besides, you need to be out of there before I start late archery in that unit. :P

I have committed to the first 10 days uninterrupted. Don't think it will take long to find three elk ;).   So if you see elk hanging, feel free to stop by and say hi. :hello:  Dennis
