Yak. res quail

Has anybody been hunting on the res. around toppenish this year? I havent made it over yet, trying to get a deer out of the way.....Im curious how the quail hatch was this year.......Thanks

My dad and I went to the Reservation opening weekend. We didn't think the hatch was that great. I shot 7 quail in 3 days and he shot one. I shot my first rooster too. I should have shot a limit of pheasants though on opening morning but I couldn't hit anything :dunno:.

Quail are all over I have not seen much for pheasants.

Lots of quail everywhere, and lots of phesants in certain places. Kinda wierd actually. I didn't shoot any because I was duck hunting for the opener.

Quail Hatch was outstanding.  Pheasant and chukar stunk!

I am taking my son tomorrow to see if we can find bird or two.  Just want him to get a shot!  Friend with the dog cannot go so we will have to work at it.

spent yesterday  there.  Did not see one quail.  Saw pheasants,
mostly near all the standing corn- no hunting.  Not many birds
in the hunting areas.  One shot and one rooster for our day.

Despite popular opinion the Canyon has a goodly amount of Chukar. We limited last weekend along the road and were selective early on...trying to spend the day out on the hills so no reason to hurry things up. Of course...you still have to walk those soft rolling hills. Up. Down. Again. Again.
Saw lots of birds though.
Can give ya the Road Marker. Straight Up. Side Hill. Straight Down. Wash rinse repeat.
Saw Quail up the first draw...let them go

I grew up ten minutes from the rez, and I've spent 20-30 days pheasant/quail hunting down there for the last 5 years or so, and this is the worst year I've seen yet. There are good numbers of quail, but it's the Yakima valley, there are always a lot of quail. Pheasants, not so much. Might be better to head to the Snake or Palouse or Grant for more birds. And I'm not just saying that because I'm a local and want less people down there, I know the crowds will clear in 3 weeks. But that late season crowd won't include me as much this year. Sad.

The Yakima Nation website says the pheasant count on the reservation is at a ten year high.  I thought the pheasant hunting was a bit spotty opening weekend.  There is a lot of standing corn on the res right now.  Huntin' should improve a bit when it's cut.  We didn't see many quail either, but didn't really target them.
