going out this weekend...
« on: October 21, 2009, 07:41:35 AM »
Heading out with my future father in law for some hunting this weekend up near Ione/Metaline Falls area.  Hoping to put the smack down on a bruin finally!  hes going after a deer and im going after a bear.  He used to live in the area and has some spots,  but i had a few questions for anyone whos hunted/familiar this area (GMU 113 i believe)

What areas/food sources should i be looking for or glassing this time of year?  any other general advice would be great.  i think if i had an idea of what the bears are doing right now i might have a better chance.  i dont think ive hunted this late in the season for bears so any advice would be helpfull!

thanks in advance,

hey rasbo do you think theyll be after the elder berries this time of year?  my father in law  claims theres alot of them in the spots he wants to take me.  however in my experience over the last few years ive been in lots of bear areas and the elder berries always look un touched?  any other food sources i might want to key in on?  having never been upto the area im just looking for ideas of things i should keep my eyes open for.  i hear its thick cover up there so hopfully ill be able to see the food then see the bear then be able to get a shot off.  cant wait im getting excited LOL

well if my partner for the weekend wasnt going to try and deer hunt id for sure try and call one in.... i just dont know how hes gunna feel about me squeaking around the woods like a distressed rabbit or what not while hes deer hunting.  guess maybe ill just wait and see what the lay of the land is.  perhaps the old divide and conquer strategy will work out.  thanks for the input rasbo!

thanks Gutpile but i went and got some new toys today.

Catnip (far left), Sycho Tweety (middle), and primos bleating fawn (right)

figured if im gunna call in a bear it might as well be with some brand new calls ;)  anyways really liking this new Randy Anderson 'Cat Nip' call.  ill let ya know if i get a chance to use them!  if i happen to call in  a coyote i dont know if ill be able to resist my bloodlust....

well just got back late last night.  we didnt see any bears or deer.  well we saw deer but they were all in town. between sat and sunday we saw atleast 16 deer in the town of Ione.   sorta makes a guy wonder when he sees more deer in town then he does in the mountains whats going on.

anyways hunted hard for two days saw a decent amount of bear sign the first day but had no luck calling in  anything.  not sure what the bears are doing or what they are eating at the moment.  all the plants seem to be really damaged from the early frost we had back in the beginning of october.

thinking if this doesnt happen for me this year and i dont get a spring bear tag next spring that next fall im going to have to look up bearpaw and do a hunt with him.
