Strange deer activity!
«

Hey all, I just want to share what I've experianced the last 4-5 days. Well I'm fortunate enough to have a father inlaw who owns 150 wooded acres with a few nice 10-20 acre clear cuts on it with a bunch of old growth on the rest and I always see deer out there no matter what. I bow hunt for both deer and elk and this past early season I saw some nice bucks out there, one that was a huge 4 point. I tryed but couldn't get within bow range. So to my question. My 12 year old boy is hunting for his 2nd year and we have gone out in this private land every day since opening day and have not seen a single deer anywhere out there. Our weather has been perfect hunting weather and still nothing. I'm just absolutely shocked over this and don't know why there isn't any movement going on. There's no one else hunting out there so hunting pressure is not a issue. Could there be something causing these deer to stay in their beds or what. I've been hunting for quite a few years and I've never seen this. I feel bad for my son because he thinks it's him but I try to reassure him that it is not him but the deer acting really wierd. Any advise would really help. Thanks guys!!

SUPER SECRET PM SENT.... Don't show it to anyone else man. We don't want the secret to get out about why deer are hard to find on private acreage of 100-500 acres during rifle season. Its what separates the average hunter from the elite.

I think I know. First you eat three mushrooms, get a baseball bat spin 20 times, then do a hand stand for 5 minutes and the deer will come out. DONT TELL ANYONE!

well for whitetails, this is one of the worst months to hunt whitetails, they hunker down, called the Oct lull, its a quiet period just before the rutting frenzy begins

Blacktails are in the chasing phase of the pre-rut right now. Been seeing bucks daily for the past four days between 7:30-9:30 AM, but mostly smaller guys out testing the ladies patience. The bigger bucks will get more active as the weekend and next week progress. Stay after it but given the size of the property, I'd see if you can watch from a distance rather than bugger it up with scent and pressure. 150 acres isn't a big area.

Its been a weird season so far. I have seen very few blacktails, they are doing most of their moving at night. I think its a combination of weather and low deer numbers in general. I have a buddy who has been hunting the watershed all week and has only seen 9 deer, and about half of those were in the road in the dark! You would think with the shi*&y rainy weather their would be deer all over. I bet the last few days are going to get pretty good......I hope

Been up in the Manastash/Taneum quite a bit in October and have seen VERY FEW deer. During opening weekend it was even worse and ZERO deer were hanging in the camps that I saw.

Ive got some property in Randal where we go every year. There was eight of us only four were hunting, but we were all in the woods.Had three kids,so mom and dad were tagging along.Out of the eight of us we only seen four does and one two point,we got the buck, but that is the least amount of deer Ive ever seen opening weekend.
All of the roads are gated in the low lands, but at night you can sit around the fire and hear the quads running around

Same thing on the east side. Nothing moving. Last Thursday to yesterday I saw 115 head of deer. 12 bucks and two were legal. I saw the two legal bucks on Thursday afternoon. Opening morning...nothing.... Tuesday afternoon, I saw a bachlor group of 6 bucks and 1 doe. EVERY buck was a two point. One was huge. He was about 22-23 inches wide and had at least 12 inch deep forks. The property I hunt on usaully has 6-8 bucks every year on opening weekend. Only two were taken this year. My streak is broken. No bambi this year.

I spent 4 days hunting Entiat area and seen the lowest number of deer yet.
Most of the deer we seen were on private land or just above the property line. We usually see doe's up in the hills every day but not this year. Did not even hear much shooting in the area.

Just got back last night from Brewster,Carlton. One very large mature 2 x 3 was taken in our group Not by me) had huge bases and mass old deer for sure. Saw one 3 pt on opening morning and a few smaller bucks. Sunday saw 2 smaller bucks sparring and one nice buck but a hunting buddy botched a shot on it. Saw a couple of smaller bucks in the Carlton area and very few deer in general. Heard of one nice 4 pt and a blackie taken in the area we hunted in Carlton. So far we have hunted the muzzy opener and opening weekend in Carlton and have seen very few deer at all. Still hoping that the weather will drop the big deer down for my late nov muzzy hunt in the Alta unit.

the 100 acres of clearcut that i have been watching has 6 active does in it (that i have layed eyes on). this evening i can face to face with 2 of them as i crested out of the heavy timber into the clearcut, we stared at each other for 2-3 minutes before they bounded off. they disappeared around a slash pile that was 100 ft from the timber, i know i saw something right next to the timber about 300 ft out but the brush was so thick that i couldn't make it out even with my leupold mojaves.. i sat and watched for about 10 minutes then i heard something descend into the timber breaking sticks, was this likely a buck?? have yet to actually see any bucks but a ton of sign.. i'm just being patient watching and being very quiet..
dreaming of the antlers..

The "lul" is just about over, shooter bucks on the back 40 are getting more active during daylight hours. Lots of new rubs, it won't be long! Not bothering to go out till the end of next week, should be very good.... it always is

Ya I agee blacktail, the lul is about over I think because we went out back this morning and finally saw some deer. Only 3 but still better then none. My 12 year old and I saw 2 does with a 2 point with them. He had about 20 seconds to put a bullet in the chamber and find the buck in his scope, but because of his inexperiance he was not able to do all that in that short of time, so the deer wondered in to the thick brush. At least their moving now a little more.
