How would you hunt it!
« on: October 22, 2009, 09:11:18 PM »
Ive hunted an area where ive gotten a couple bucks.1 was a dandy 3 point plus eyeguards.

There is a spot where there are fresh rubs every year.Seems to me like a pretty large deer making them. They are on alders about 4 - 10 inches in diameter.

To get to it I go through a decent patch of app. 20 year old fir.Its open and clean underneath. No browse.

I can look down a hill from there about 100feet.And see the rubs.On the other side of that area is brushy jackfir about 10-12 years old. Then about 100 yards further out is a creek. Then more brush too thick to walk through. The 10-12 year old stuff stretches several 100 yard to each side of this area.

Should I just find a spot on the hill and settle in trying to be as hidden as possible. What about hanging any scents.Etc.

Ive thought about hanging a game cam for awhile to see whats there. But havent done it yet.

Anyhow.I'm just looking for advice on the best way to go about this.

Thanks,
Hntnfsh

set up crosswind or downwind and do some subtle doe bleats to see if you can pull a buck out of the thick stuff.  I'd probably get down close to the edge or put some obstacle between you and where you expect the buck to come from, so they have to come looking for you.  After bleats, try some rattling but be ready.  I've had blacktails come right in and catch me in the act.  Good luck!

Id say trailcam. Might be a little late now, but if you find an area with that amount of sign next year you should put out a cam or two. You get a chance to see the quality of the deer in the area and if they stick around you can hopefully pattern them making your odds better during season. Good luck! :)

Keep in mind too that the bucks are moving more now, seeking doe groups and scent checking trail systems.  Keep rattling that thicket and mix it up, morning, mid-day, and evening.  Trolling bucks may be in there or nearby at any time.  Does aren't in heat quite yet so the bucks are going to make the rounds to keep tabs on them.  Doe bleats and estrous bleats into next week should produce some action, as will rattling.  Watch the wind carefully and don't call unless you're in position and can shoot.  Start soft with all calling and wait about 5 minutes.  Your next sequence can be a bit louder and a tad longer, mabye 3-4 minutes.  Wait another 15.  Listen and watch carefully especially your flanks around to your downwind side.  Also, play the wind & weather in terms of how loud you call.  When it is dead quiet out (not today!) you can call softer.  When it is windy, rainy, gusty, you'll need to get some volume out there.  Loud thumping on the ground with a large stick will carry further and mimic hoof stomping.  This can also draw a buck in quickly.

huck a m80 in there and wait for the carnege, or tell someone where it is and have them flush it for you. Good luck

M80?? Really??? Excellent advise.   But funny!

Everyone has good points.  I would probably sit up in the timber you describe that is open.  Just make sure your hidden and could make a subtle movement to get your rifle up or whatever, when he comes in.
