Sorry boys, those are chums  on that rack!!! Evidently neither of you have read the book "1,000 uses for Red No.3"!!! Those were soaked in a simple brine with a bottle of Red food coloring, I don't personally care for chums, but the people who get this fish don't seem to know the difference!!! And it does look way more appetizing red than brown! :chuckle:
To each their own, Wapitihunter does a great job on smoking fish, these he got from a friend, they were pretty firm, so decided to do up a pile for them. Tomorrow he is heating up the pressure cooker and going to can some to see how it turns out.
I prefere Silvers....

I think I just :puke: a little...

If I catch a fish that would require dying the meat red so it looks edible, that fish is going back in the water.   :o

M-Ray,

I'd be nervous to venture a guess what you would like to eat...

as for the chum...think I have a hot date with some along with houndhunter so we will see ;)

If they look gross Ill let em swim...  should be fun to catch em any way :dunno:

the only way i like fishing for chums is when they're thick and i can catch a bunch of them.  none of that BS standing around with 200 idiots on the nisqually waiting for one to run into my line.  we used to have 100 fish days on the satsop in years past.

if i figure i'll only catch a few, i'd rather go after coho or steelhead.
you can still get gas in heaven, and a drink in kingdom come,
in the meantime, i'll be cleaning my gun

They are fun to catch and they get you tuned up for winter steelheading. Trust me if you are doing it right they will test senses but if you just rip on everything you feel you will end up snagging 99% of them I usually hook 99% in the mouth but I have gotten to the point that I can tell now when they are just swimming through my line and I don't set the hook. Usually their bite is very very light. Also they will test your gear and you will get a feel for how much pressure you can put to them with your drag and thumb and how much pressure your line will handle ... this is great information to pay attention to when in March you hook into that 20+ pound Steelie, It has helped me on more than one occasion!  ;)

Oh and yes there are a few things I've eaten that I wont do again!!!  :chuckle:

Some people would eat a dried turd if you die it red and sprinkle liq. smoke on it. and ask for more.

I agree if it needs die it's fertilizer not food.

Chum is great if still good color. smoked with lemon pepper on it.
Fun to catch and the hardest pulling fish you can catch in a small river with big numbers. Had many trips we had to sit down and take a break because our arms were so cramped up.

Anyone go up to the hatcher at Hoodsport today?  Thinking about running up there tomarrow with the kids, they haven't been fishing in a while.  Did the netters get them all?

Let's see.... no fish to smoke or chum to smoke?   I WILL take the chum anyday over nothing!

Good luck to all.

I fished the hatchery yesterday and didnt do to good but cruised the beach looking for fish and saw an area where they were showing and ended up catching quite a few but they were NASTY! Now i would keep one if it were somewhat  bright because ive had them from the ocean and they were fine but i didnt even want to touch these! still fun but a few were like ready to literally die they squirted milk and eggs when we were unhooking them... i took a couple pics anyway but i gotta get them on the computer... A few fought really good and were real fun but a few were like reeling up a zombie fish.... that i imagine is that case with any fish though thats super close to spawning... beats sitting at home anyday though!

Had my step brother tell me he used some of this smoked chum in a Salmon Fettucini dish for some friends and they claimed it was the best smoked salmon they had ever had!!!! They were insistent on wanting to know where it came from. :dunno:

The flavor was spectacular yet some of it was a little soft and some turned out great. My cousin was also freaking out over it so to all the naysayers, I thought it turned out ok.
