2009 Deer Pics

Our group tagged out with 5 bucks by Wednesday of general season.  Attached are my brothers 4x4 buck and my 4x3.  In addition, I have attached our group deer pics.

Markts- The wide one is my favorite too because I got him   Truth be told I missed a buck the day before that would make my buck which is about 23 1/2 wide look like a chump.  After he trotted over the hill my brother, brother in law, and I discussed how big he was.  Our consensus was somewhere in the 26" to 27" range but he was only a 3x3.  Oh well.. it happens.  They laughed and I cried

Lazydrifter-  Yep you are correct still in velvet.  A totally cool buck that my brother in law shot.  We got one last year as well.  Funny enough my brother in law had scaled the most nasty canyon in the area we hunt chasing another dandy buck and came across the velvet buck, which he decided to take a closer look at.  After an hour of belly crawling one shot from 239 yards out of his 300 WSM did the trick.

Vfilbert- Good call, the area we hunt has some serious whitetail / mulie breeding going on.  It is not uncommon to see cross breeds.  Some may call B.S. but I have seen several bucks taken with cross breed characteristics.

Some may call B.S. but I have seen several bucks taken with cross breed characteristics.

My daughters did. It had a whitetails tail but all black and about half the size of a normal whitey, the body was very grey, and the ears were bigger than my WT buck's ears. It definately happens.

Cross-breeds occur in many areas across the west.  Colorado's eastern plains is an example where you'll see coloration variations like that buck you guys got, and it's not uncommon to see a "mule deer" frame with 5-6" brows, and "whitetail" frames with rear splits and shorter brows.  Every population is different but this condition is not uncommon where mule deer and whitetails share the same core areas.

Was the one that is still velvet missing his male parts? Or have any doe traits?

Bullseeker- The buck still in velvet was not missing his male parts, but they were very small say the size of peanuts.  He was most definitely sterile.
