To all the White River Unit hunters!!
« on: November 17, 2009, 09:38:15 PM »
So me my brother and my good friend had gone up deer hunting every weekend day this deer season for modern.  We will be attending the late buck in the same area.  I am putting this out to all the white river hunters, where the hek are all the deer.  We have seen a few does and a couple small bucks.  We have always done very well out there and it just seems like the population has dropped dramatically.  Please tell me its just my bad placement at the wrong times.  How have you guys been doin?

my buddie hunts that unit. im not sure what weapon he is hunting with this year. but i talked to him the second weekend of the general modern firearm season. and he said he hadnt seen a single buck all season, and only a few does/fawns.

usually he hunts modern firearm and gets a 2pt or better every single year. but this year he was talking about switching things up. that may very well be the reason he isnt seeing anything this year in the unit...

Yes, and what the tribes have not shot up, the cougars have eaten. Cougar numbers went through the roof starting in the early '90s. Deer and elk have been decimated since then.

The white river unit is capable of hosting a vast number of deer and elk but has not been managed properly.

Sorry buddy, but after three glasses of homemade wine, this is hard to understand. Maybe I haven't had enough yet.

If the tribes are hunting cougars, then I say great! I just haven't seen enough harvest on cougars to make any difference. If they want elk and deer numbers to increase, then they need to use some casino money to pay guys full time to hunt these killing machines. Otherwise, they will need to turn to beef. Besides, it's what's for dinner when you are too lazy to hunt or manage properly. Oh ya, when the wolves eat up the rancher's beef, what will there be? Tofu?

The whole white river drainage population is down. It seemed to be a steady decline over the last number of years, indian hunting 6 months out of the year has a huge part to do with it.....They dont seem to care, just keep killing and killing, wait until they buy the tree farm- it will really be effed'......

we'll be lucky if we can hunt in the white river, except for Na forest of course, when the muck's buy the handcock properties. I've hunted that area for elk for many years, at least till it went permit only, it is a perfect area for deer and elk. If the damn muck's would help us manage this unit it would be better than any unit on the west side (besides the watershed). I personally know a local game warden and he has many, many horror stories of elk and deer being slaughtered and left because they fell dead 100 yards from the road. The vain in his forhead sticks out when you bring up the indian hunting topic, ma by some day we will get a Governor with some balls and change some laws in OUR state when it comes to indian harvest. Prob not in our lifetime. SSS
