Why the skull?
« on: October 28, 2009, 12:43:50 PM »
OK, this has been bothering me for a while now.

Why is it that we record the skull size on bears for the books and not say a squared rug? What is the advantage of this.

I do not know many that actually mount just the skull, most seem to want a rug? That may be an incorrect assumption though?

I know I would rather have a color phase bear of a decent size for a rug myself, I would not care in the least how big the skull was.

Though having a pin headed bear would be kind of weird, lol

In my opinion it is set up to track the best quality of animals. Because bear habitat differs greatly the best way to measure a bear is with a skeletal structure (the skull). I would guess that regardless of diet and nutritional uptake a bear's skull is going to grow to full genetic potential whereas the hide may never reach full potntial given the diet restrictions. This is only my view and there is no scientific evidence to back my claim. Just simply my opinion.

Think about it. A  huge rack of antlers doesn't always equate to the largest deer. In addition to that ... A skull is a practical method of measuring because it does not get cut or stretched much. That pretty much is inline with luvtohunt's remarks.

:yeah:you can't stretch bone very well but you sure can stretch a hide bone shows the true size of the animal and is the best way for the non horn big game animals to be scored plus i love skulls

I dig my skull collection, can only have so many rugs or mounts.

Perhaps they do this because skulls are more consistent year round, while the hide varies in size from spring to fall?

Nuff said...the skull provides a solid, consistent method to relate one animal to the next.  Hair and hide is plyable.

'cause the antlers fall off.
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

They measure the skull, cause his ass will shrink to much!!!!!   :yike: :yike: :bdid:
By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.
