30.06-Best grain for a white tail doe???
« on: October 28, 2009, 06:42:40 PM »
I'll be hunting Iowa's doe rifle season this January, and was wondering what my best options would be for ammo.  All I have is the 30-06.  Any suggestions???

Thanks in advance.

PLACEMENT!
We must reject the idea that every time a law's broken, society is guilty rather than the lawbreaker. It is time to restore the American precept that each individual is accountable for his actions.

PLACEMENT!

They all will do fine. the .30-06 puts them down well. Placement will save the most meat.

I have found that 165 grain is best grain regardless of what your hunting with 30.06 "it's all about placement". If your not hand loading your own try Hornady Custom Ammunition 30-06 Springfield 165 Grain SST.

 :yeah:

165 gr hp and ballistic tips (I think with 56.5 gr IMR 4350) have been the most accurate in my 3 rifles (haven't reloaded any in years so have not used some of the newer bullets), A-bolt, Rem 760 pump, and 1917 Eddystone.  All three shoot the same handload to inch or less groups at 100 yards, even with only the peep on the old one.

They just seem to really like that 165 gr., but like others have said, anything from 150 -180 would be fine.  I like the ballistic tip for WT because of the generally close shots, expands quickly.

I'd only take a head shot on does. No wasted meat. Gr doesn't matter. Doe hunts are meat hunts.  :twocents:

Grain doesn’t matter, use what shoots best in your rifle.  Whatever you use it will cut through like butter, placement is the key to not ruining a lot of meat.  I like just behind the shoulder avoiding the offside shoulder and keeping in front of the digestive tract.

+1.  Pick the most accurate in your rifle.

whatever shoots the best out of your gun..... and probably not a ballistic tip.  then tuck it right behind the shoulder and watch her come down.
