Shed snagging
«
on:
January 01, 2008, 11:10:49 AM »
I talked to a guy from Idaho who's grandkids stretch out cables just high enough for bucks to snag their racks on during shedding. They pile up hay and grain around the areas they set up the snags. They are young kids, under ten years I believe, but they have accumulated a mess of sheds the last few years. Anybody ever set up snags? Seems like it can have its downsides if ya know what I mean.

Yeah, that is not sounding like a really good idea. Sheds loosen when they are ready. Grab an antler too soon, and not nice.

Hey Iceman, doesn't sound like you watched that link. I know your on dial-up but it is worth it if you can load it and walk away until its ready, pretty funny.

i dont think the antlers all start to loosen up at the same time.

Winter of 96 when the state fed there were all kinds of antlers knocked off on the feeders. I personally think that intentionally snagging or forcing antlers to fall off before they naturally do is totally wrong and irresponsible. My opinion goes for people chasing or harrassing animals trying to get the same result. This type of activity to get sheds is what is causing more and more regulations and restrictions. Again only one persons opinion.

I can't believe some people and how far they will go to get an antler.
I hadn't seen the video of the deer caught on the swing before and to be honest, I don't see anything funny about it. There is a wow factor to the video but the way I see it, a nice buck probably died a slow (at least stressful) death.

I know a guy that throws alfalfa into a pile of brush. It seems to work pretty good, he has over 20 sets of whitie shed so far this year.

Sorry man! I am chomping at the bit to get over there and do some shed and bobcat hunting! It will have to wait until the middle of next month. My buddy is watching a HUUUGE 6x6 mulie buck and waiting for him to drop. He has picked up a couple of mulie sheds already but nothing big. It seems a little early for mulies, eh?
